Job Description:
The Lead Market Analyst/Sr. Market Analyst evaluates the economic performance of ISO New England’s electricity markets. Using the ISO’s market data, the Analyst evaluates the impact of market design changes, new products, or market-clearing rules on economic efficiency, prices, and other properties of ISO’s inter-related suite of markets.

The Analyst works closely with the ISO’s Ph.D. economists to plan quantitative assessments of the markets’ performance; the Analyst conducts the analyses, and communicates analytic methods, results, and their interpretation in technical reports, impact assessments, and presentations. The objective is to help senior management and market participants understand how and why electricity markets change over time, and the impact of ISO market design initiatives on the markets’ performance.

Major responsibilities

Assist in the planning, definition, and execution of quantitative assessments of ISO New England’s electricity markets. This will include performing data analyses using statistical and database/query software, writing summaries of quantitative analyses, interpreting and explaining methods and findings, and preparing presentation materials. The Analyst is expected to work productively as part of the ISO’s Market Development department to assess market performance and interpret the ISO’s economic and market/operational data. Projects will involve both efforts to evaluate the potential and actual impacts of market design changes for management and market participants, as well as ad hoc requests to quantify and understand market impacts related to new issues that emerge from time to time.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Develop knowledge of existing market design/rules and operating procedures;
• Develop thorough understanding of the ISO’s data repositories to be able to identify and retrieve appropriate information to perform analyses;
• Participate and assist in project planning for evaluating the economic impact of major market initiatives;
• Perform economic and statistical calculations with the ISO’s data using statistical, database, simulation, and economic modeling software tools;
• Perform power system and market simulations to better understand the impacts of potential changes to the markets.
• Prepare presentation materials that can convey complex content.
• Prepare written summaries and brief reports that document analysis objectives, methods, assumptions, data, results, and their interpretation.
• Work with other ISO departments to assure the technical accuracy of analyses and interpretation.

This position requires command of intermediate or advanced microeconomics, data analysis experience, and interest in the design and operation of competitive electricity markets.

Primary requirements include:

• An undergraduate or graduate degree in Economics, Management Science, Business/Finance, Operations Research, Statistics, or comparable qualification with demonstrated knowledge of intermediate or advanced microeconomics;
• Direct experience retrieving and analyzing economic and market data using statistical/database and spreadsheet software;
• Knowledge of competitive electricity markets and how they work;
• Ability to understand and apply economic concepts of efficiency, incentives, and supply/demand changes to electricity markets;
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams.
