Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory and the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or designated Shift Supervisor, the Lead Medical Technologist provides clinical laboratory services and immediate supervision to assigned laboratory section in accordance with accepted practices of Departmental and Hospital standards of care, with further responsibilities including involvement in departmental inventory, validation of monthly quality control, new procedures and /or equipment.

Supportive of the ethics and compliance programs forth by HCA Healthcare demonstrated by:

a. Upholds code of conduct.

b. Adheres to dealing appropriately and fairly with employee’s misconduct.

c. Enforces all ethics and compliance policies as they pertain to his/her area.

d. Provides and assures ethics and compliance education as requested by the ECO and/or corporate initiative.

e. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.

2. Responsible for training and evaluating staff on the overall code of conduct and specific policies and procedures that affect department specific responsibilities (examples may include but not limited to PEPP, medical necessity, lab compliance, billing and coding).

3. If an ethics and compliance issue is identified, takes appropriate action to correct and/or report any violation that he/she is aware of in the department or the facility

4. Assists in data collection for statistical surveys or other reports generated by the Department.

5. Participates in quality control and performance improvement activities within the Department.

6. Maintains a good understanding of the operation of all equipment in the performance of clinical laboratory testing to include troubleshooting and minor repair.

7. Facilitates communication between the Laboratory and members of the Medical Staff and other Hospital Departments to enhance patient care services.

8. Maintains proper monthly scheduling of section employees for coverage of current patient workload.

9. Maintains adequate inventory of Section supplies.

10. Responsible for procedure validation within designated section.

11. Responsible for instrumentation calibration for responsible section.

12. Maintains compliance with CAP regulations for laboratory section of responsibility.

13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory or Laboratory Supervisor.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES.

1. Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles pertaining to the designated area or areas of responsibility.

a. Applies general knowledge of procedures in Hematology, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Phlebotomy.

b. Applies general knowledge of instrumentation in all areas of the

Laboratory.

c. Applies general knowledge of quality control in designated areas of

Laboratory responsibilities.

d. Collects specimens as needed utilizing appropriate precautions to

promote patient comfort and minimize potential for exposure.

e. Processes routine test results to include analysis, calculations, and

reporting of results.

2. Utilizes an understanding of clinical laboratory principles in the maintenance of instrumentation with a focus on maintenance of all quality controls.

a. Responsible for instrument preventive maintenance performance

throughout designated area or areas of responsibility.

b. Performs routine shift start-up, including quality controls and

documentation of these controls.

c. Responsible for performance of appropriate shift maintenance of instrumentation for designated area or areas of responsibility.

d. Ensures reliability of results by proper use of quality controls with

recalibration and corrective actions taken when needed.

e. Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies for assigned

area of responsibility.

f. Validates new methods, procedures and instruments.

g. Performs trouble-shooting as required with reporting of major

problems with instrumentation for repair.

h. Documentation complete for all instruments and quality control

problems.

3. Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the recording and reporting of testing results.

a. Records results of quality controls and patient testing accurately.

b. Notifies physicians and other members of the health care team of

results in a timely manner with immediate reporting of critical values.

c. Documents name and time who receives results on areas worksheet

and in computer system.

4. Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in performing general duties.

a. Performs procedures utilizing Universal Precautions to minimize the

potential for exposure to infectious processes.

b. Disposes of all instrumentation, reagents and patient wastes

appropriately to minimize exposure potential.

c. Applies safety principles in the handling of all chemicals and other

potentially hazardous substances in the laboratory environment.

d. Maintains a clean, neat work area to minimize the potential for errors

in testing and hazards in the laboratory.

5. Bases decision-making on sound principles related to cost containment in the Department.

6. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide clinical Laboratory services to patients served in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to age-specific needs.

A. Must have completed the Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related Science Field. Must be registered with ASCP or equivalent registry.

Must have a minimum of two years previous experience in a medical laboratory with a hospital setting preferred.
