As an IT professional you have expert knowledge in one or more programming languages or databases. Because of your excellent understanding of the entire project life cycle, you have the ability to direct project teams in the gathering, design, and development of complex applications/programs. This position is responsible for the day to day management of core virtualization infrastructure for The Home Depot. Typical tasks include server design, build, installation and configuration based on VMware and OpenStack hosting Microsoft, and Linux application servers. The associate will support break/fix production activities, participate in designs for new hosted applications, and assist in internal customer support for infrastructure and business-facing IT teams. This position is also responsible for the timely maintenance and remediation of the virtualization environment including performance monitoring, patching, and troubleshooting infrastructure issues for both VMware and OpenStack/KVM. Base hardware and software standards definition and evaluation are activities typically included in this role.

The Lead Systems Engineer develops, maintains and supports The Home Depot's complex technical infrastructures, hardware, and system software components. Operates as a team lead providing expert technical direction to team members. Interface with Business Stakeholders on all complex projects. Ability to present ideas and take charge of projects. Update manager on all escalated issues.

Manage installation, maintenance and support of complex technical infrastructures, hardware, and system software components.

Manage and tune platforms to ensure expected availability and performance levels are achieved.

Provide expert technical direction to Sr. System, System, Associate Engineers and contractors.

Manage store & SSC engineering and roll-out implementation.

Perform root cause analysis for service interruption recovery; create preventative measures on complex projects.

Interface with Business Stakeholders on all applicable projects. Update manager on all escalated issues.

Typically reports to Manager, Information Technology

No associates report to this role on a permanent basis, but requires the leadership of a work group: assign and review work, train and contribute to performance appraisal (but not hiring, firing or disciplinary action).



The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diplomas and/or GED.


Frequent periods are spent standing or sitting in the same location with some opportunity to move about; occasionally there may be a need to stoop or lift light objects (typically less than 8 pounds).

Expert Knowledge and experience with computer hardware, operating systems and system software.

Candidates must possess experience managing a virtual infrastructure including VMware vSphere, VMware View, vCloud Director, OpenStack/KVM, general Linux administration, and scripting using PowerCLI and python.
Hands-on experience with datacenter server hardware technologies from HP, Dell, and Cisco.
Strong understanding of typical datacenter network and SAN technologies used to create a virtual infrastructure.
Experience with fibre channel and NFS storage technologies for hosting a virtual infrastructure.
Strong knowledge of typical x86 datacenter operating systems (Windows and Linux).
Knowledge of SQL Server, Citrix, update management, OS/Application installation scripting, remote monitoring and management of all system components is strongly preferred.
Exposure to mid and large enterprise application and infrastructure deployment processes, change management, and incident management practices.
Automated server deployment tools and scripting skills are a plus.
Ability to adapt and learn new technologies quickly.

Required Soft Skills: Excellent Customer Service, Documentation/Process, Project Management, Technical Leadership and the ability to work with project teams and other infrastructure teams to deliver quality solutions in a fast-paced environment.

Experience and Education
VMware certification preferred.
BS Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
General knowledge of Home Depot is helpful.

Expert knowledge of the PC (hardware and software) is essential.

Ability to listen to what the user is saying and then interpret what he/ she is trying to get across.

The ability to work autonomously and with a diverse team.

Ability to communicate at all levels.

Ability to present ideas and take charge of projects.
