Primary responsibilities include supporting servers from an operating system perspective and managing various business unit technical requirements. Proficiency in supporting the Linux operating system is required. Lead Systems Engineers must be able to manage project work, exhibiting strong time and project management skills. Technical leadership in troubleshooting and implementation of new technologies is required. Helping junior engineers improve their technical skills and advance their careers is a priority. In addition, a Lead Systems Engineer must analyze the environment at a high level and look for opportunities to drive automation and process improvements. Our team supports large-scale flagship products such as WestlawNext and a scale mentality is critical to success in supporting our customers effectively.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Help define the technical strategy for the Unix team, including adoption of new tools and procedures
Lead major technical initiatives across the workgroup
Support enterprise environment with ~5000 servers, mostly Linux with some AIX/Solaris
Serve as an escalation point for operational technical issues at the team level
Participate in root cause analysis for incidents as appropriate
Drive process improvements and automation.
Stay current on industry trends and new technologies and recommend future initiatives.
Leadership & Communication
Provide coaching and guidance to team members
Lead or contribute to a variety of virtual teams with members of multiple groups to proactively address support issues
Act as a lead for initiatives providing project and task direction to achieve goals.
Maintain status on all assigned work
Evaluate and recommend process improvements
Document technical problems, resolutions, and processes for assigned work for later reference
Exhibit leadership qualities and conduct business and communicate in a professional and courteous manner
Exhibit strong organizational, analytical, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills
Work closely with internal customers to understand needs, technology landscape, and changing requirements
Develop and maintain good trust relationships with internal customers supported by the team
Develop a solid understanding of supported product lines and technologies
Understand and help define internal business processes
Translate business requirements and architectural standards into technical solutions
Carry a 24x7 pager and participate in rotating pager schedule
Provide consistent follow-up on incidents/changes until long term objectives are completed
Follow policies and procedures for change and incident management

Bachelor’s degree or 7 years’ experience in related work experience.
Knowledge and Skills
5+ years of Operating System experience supporting sophisticated mission critical environments
Demonstrated project guidance with delegation experience
3+ years of direct customer service experience
Strong OEL/SUSE/RedHat background including scripting, performance tuning, patch management and firmware updates
Working knowledge of NAS, preferably NetApp
Working knowledge of network technologies and protocols
Strong scripting skills in one of the following; shell scripting, Python or PERL
Experience following ITIL change and incident management framework
Strong documentation and communication skills
Experience programming in a compiled language (C, Java, etc.)
Familiarity with distributed version control (git, mercurial, etc.)
Proficient with web and development technologies
Experience with AIX and Solaris
Experience with SAN, preferably HDS/EMC
Experience in supporting systems running Oracle or DB2
