The MSN.com News team has an opening for a dedicated News Editor focused on driving Video throughout the site. The successful candidate will also help formulate a longer term strategy to elevate video usage in storytelling on a fast turn, 24-7 basis.
The position includes day-to-day editorial programming, including decisions on which content to surface for the MSN audience in concert with other News Editors. The News Editor Video will be critical to coordinating with the MSN Creative Services group. They will provide guidance and direction to the tone and acceptability of video production and use.
Importantly, they will also provide a strong point of view on where Video should go in the US News Channel and News Services. And, contribute to broader thinking and coordination with MSN International sites.
Candidates should have previous news experience in real-time hierarchy decision making, creating processes for expedition and accuracy, and be capable of guiding contractors and staff.
Understanding and assuring our daily video priorities are tied to stories we are working on, etc. Creating a seamless system in sync with the rest of the newsroom especially aligning with its tone and editorial direction
Developing and refining breaking news processes and coverage. Speed in ingestion and getting video to our users will be a critical KPI.
Assuring the News Channel hits any sponsorship video targets, ensuring pre-roll impressions are hit & Hero player goals
Coordinating relationships we have with outside content providers to assure a smooth, clean flow of information and ingestion. This includes working to grow engagement through those relationships and resulting output.
Raw video editing skills, live streaming experience, and experience dealing directly with video partners such as Reuters, BBC and CNN
Managing against our News KPIs and synching to bridge gaps and needs with the broader MSN KPIs.
Our team will work to successfully deliver high quality news experiences using both data and previous journalism knowledge. MSN News will uniquely focus on what the wider web audience is looking for in its news consumption and deliver against those needs. We work in a fast-paced, 24-7-365 publishing environment, and candidates should be versatile in both tasks performed and topic expertise. This is a full-time Microsoft position.
Candidates must be seasoned video editor with at least five years of experience in a daily digital news environment, and at least two years working in Web-based publishing. They should possess strong communication and partnering skills, and be able to work effectively across groups, with freelancers and contractors, to work under pressure and to manage strict deadlines. Candidates must be detail-oriented, highly organized, self-motivated and resourceful. They must also have a thorough understanding of Web publishing -- including Web behavior, Web culture and what does and doesn't work from a consumer point of view -- as well as a passion for Web publishing. Strong news judgment and knowledge of current events/popular culture is essential. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism or experience equivalent in a related field.
This position is Seattle based and will report to the Executive Producer/News. Candidates are asked to submit a short strategic vision document for News Video along with their application.
