Definition:
Instructors are members who are assigned a majority (i.e., 50% or more) of their time in the classroom or closely related activities. The duties of the instructional faculty consists of classroom assignments or closely related activities, and other responsibilities which are necessary for the effective and efficient operation the member’s department, division, college and District that total a load factor of 1.00 each semester in accordance with Article 18.

Assignment:
The teaching assignment may require teaching day, evening and Saturday classes as needed during winter, spring, summer and/or fall semesters. This recruitment process is to pre-qualify you for possible future assignments. As an assignment becomes available, you may be contacted to determine if you are available to teach.

Work location: West Valley College, Saratoga and/or Mission College, Santa Clara

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is based on a percentage of workload up to a maximum of 67% (percent). Salary is prorated based on a minimum salary range of $18,261 – $20,955; maximum earnable up to $29,559.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in the category of disability (learning disabilities), special educcation, education, psychology, educational psychology or rehabilitation counseling AND

15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in an area of disability (learning disabities)

Possession of a valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Special Education (Handicapped); OR

The equivalent of the above.

Degrees must be earned from an accredited institution.

Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the equivalency form which is part of the application package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.

Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees, by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice, thus will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.

Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.

Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.

Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.

Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.

Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.

Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.

Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.

Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.

Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in careers in Administration of Justice.

Work cooperatively within the college community.

Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.

Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.

Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.

Selection Process:
