The Department of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks highly qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Lecturer. Lecturers in the English Department are responsible for teaching a 3/3 load, but may be eligible for teaching a seventh course, usually during the fall semester, as required by the department. UIC is an AA/EOE.
The course load is composed almost entirely of First-Year Writing Program courses, including English 070, English 071, English 160, and English 161. In some cases, lecturers may be asked to teach courses in literature, creative writing, or some other area for which they might be qualified. Course size is capped at 24 students. In addition to teaching courses, lecturers are responsible for attending required staff meetings and professional development workshops throughout the year. Newly hired lecturers must be available for a year-opening conference, this year to be held on August 16, 2013
Successful applicants will demonstrate skill in teaching academic writing to first-year students. In addition, new instructors must demonstrate a willingness and ability to design new syllabi that support the genre-based conceptual framework of the program. MA, MFA, PhD or equivalent is required. Applicants with professional writing and teaching interests in film, media studies, or the teaching of English as a second language are especially encouraged to apply.
