The University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for the position of Library Director. The Director will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and have operational, strategic, and fiscal responsibility for all aspects of the M. Louis Salmon Library.

The Director will provide strategic planning and policy direction in the areas of collection development, public and technical services, facilities planning, budget development and personnel. The Director is expected to lead, and support, an on-going transformation into a changing digital environment and the expanding instructional and scholarship role of an academic library. She/he will need to consider results of research on how learning occurs and the impact of digital media on the teaching and learning process as part of this transformation. The Library Director will understand and support the values of a public, comprehensive Research University (Very High Research Activity). The Director will have the experience necessary to address challenges facing today’s academic libraries, including the library’s role in providing information, supporting teaching and scholarship, delivering and preserving information in an electronic age, and using space effectively. With a strong record of fostering innovation and building an inclusive climate, the Director will have the experience and professional qualifications to support teamwork, set high standards, and craft long-term strategies for the library, while growing outreach efforts and undertaking fund-raising in collaboration with the Development Office. The candidate must be committed to collaboration with individuals and groups inside and outside the University. The Director will be expected to provide vision and leadership in collaborating with other libraries within the University of Alabama System in enhancing shared resources and platforms, and in developing collaborations with other institutions in the greater Huntsville community. The Director will also provide vision and leadership in developing strategies for maintaining, developing, and providing access to archives, including those related to the history of the US Space Program in Huntsville.

Leadership, vision, excellent communication skills and extensive knowledge and experience related to a modern research University-based library are required. This individual must be a transformational leader capable of building on current University and community strengths while considering the library’s future role in information technology, teaching, learning and research. The candidate must possess the ability to lead and collaborate with diverse groups of people providing support for the University community. The ideal candidate is expected to have seven or more years of broad-based library experience with five years in a supervisory or management role within an academic, or equivalent, library. The candidate must have demonstrable experience in administration, budget management, personnel management and strategic planning. The successful candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Library Science or related field, and equivalent professional experience. A second Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is preferred as well as demonstrated experience integrating library services with University curricula, academic support, information literacy and research. Demonstrated experience with digital media and in developing and supporting access to archival collections are preferred. A demonstrated track record of securing external funding, including grants and gifts is desirable.
