This is a non-exempt position responsible for checking in materials, maintaining the arrangement of library materials and preparing materials for circulation. Evening and weekend work is required. Work is supervised by a section assistant supervisor and the section supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

• Check in and sort all formats of library materials
• Route/mail materials to owning or requesting libraries
• Print out patron information for reserves and missing-piece/damaged items
• Magnetize all formats of materials for security
• Prepare carts of materials for shelving from the sorting shelves
• Retrieve and process new books from Technical Services section
• Prepare periodicals for display and circulation
• Respond to phone requests for materials in sorting area
• Reshelve materials that have been returned or used at the library
• Maintain proper and neat arrangements of library materials
• Pick up and stack materials from book bin floor after holidays/weekends
• Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
• Update loose-leaf reference materials
• Fill photocopiers with paper
• Special projects, sometimes involving working cooperatively with other library sections
• Make referrals to public service desks as appropriate
• Shift periodicals from current to holding shelves
• Other tasks as assigned

Typical Qualifications:

• Ability to lift, crouch, kneel, stand, bend, reach or walk for an entire work shift
• Ability to reach shelving within a height range of floor level to 75 inches (may be reached with a step stool), to lift up to 30 pounds, to work at floor level picking up items in the book drop room, and to push a loaded book cart (300 lbs.) on carpeting
• Ability to keep up in a very fast-paced, physically-demanding work environment
• The ability to quickly and accurately sort materials alphabetically and numerically
• Good organizational skills
• Computer skills: turning on/off, reboot, mouse skills, keyboarding
• Ability to learn library's circulation and email software
• Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
• Tactful and courteous communication skills
• Ability and willingness to continue education in computers and library issues
• Ability to work as a team member, maintain effective relationships with coworkers
