The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.
PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a The Research Assistant II/Lab Manager will support on-going research projects and assist with conducting lab experiments, maintaining lab supplies and coordinating research projects with other lab staff.
This is an full-time, non-exempt position.
General lab organization and maintenance, including placing orders and keeping records;
Overseeing lab jobs for routine procedures;
Maintaining laboratory compliance with regard to biosafety, chemical safety, and radiation safety and handling safety inspections;
Maintaining a mouse colony in keeping with the standards of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC);
Tracking expenditures related to specific projects and grants;
Organization of lab and computer work space and freezer/refrigerator when necessary.
Assist with training and orientation of new students and technicians;
Regular communication with lab staff to ensure coordination in supply ordering and receiving;
Assisting, as needed, with experiments of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows;
Mouse colony breeding and genotyping;
Maintain accurate laboratory notes reflecting data acquired;
General lab work, including culturing of cell lines, immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry.
BS/BA degree in Biology, Biochemistry or a health-related field or equivalent experience is highly desired;
General lab skills required, ideally working experience with rodents;
Ability to keep accurate and detailed notes on analyses and procedures;
Understanding of laboratory materials and equipment safety rules and regulations;
Understanding of basic molecular biology and blotting techniques;
Ability to work independently, but also to work as part of the lab team;
Exceptional communication and organization skills.
