Instructor duties: Instructs various age groups in swimming skills, organized according to development and ability. Plans activities for each group. Performs same duties as the Lifeguard in addition to instruction responsibilities.
Lifeguard duties: Monitors activities at City-operated swimming pools to prevent accidents, and to rescue swimmers in distress. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards. Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas. Administers first aid. Completes reports associated with accidents, incidents, and lessons. Sweeps and cleans pool decking. Removes debris from pool and pool areas. Gives general information on pool hours and general operations to patrons. The employee is expected to use some independent judgment in scheduling activities and in cases of emergency. This class performs related duties as required.
English/Spanish bilingual skills are desirable for various assignments. Additional compensation may be provided for these skills. Seasonal aquatics positions are not eligible to participate in the City of Mesa comprehensive benefit package. Scheduled hours vary from 25 - 38 hours per week. This class is FLSA exempt-recreational establishment. Applicants must be available to work from May 4, 2013, through August 4, 2013. Part-time assignments may be available after August 4, 2013.
Mandatory training dates are scheduled for all staff on May 4th, 11th and 18th, 2013.
All staff are required to purchase their own uniform: black swimsuit/shorts. Vendors will be made available. Uniform shirts will be provided by the City of Mesa. Visible tattoos are acceptable unless they contain inappropriate lettering or images such as nudity or offensive language. Accessories are limited to post earrings only. Visible body piercing, including tongue and nose piercings, are not acceptable.
Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are offered by the City of Mesa beginning in February. A Skills Test Review is offered in April. Qualified applicants must attend a Skills Test on Saturday, April 13, 2013 , to be considered for a position. In order to attend the Skills Test, an application must be received on-line by midnight, Thursday, April 4, 2013. You must bring a copy of all current required certifications and a valid Arizona Driver's License or similar identification to the Skills Test . The Skills Test will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., at Kino Aquatics Facility, 848 N. Horne, Mesa, AZ. The test includes an assessment of various Lifeguard skills, fitness level, swimming stroke techniques, and oral interview. This is the only date the test will be offered. The test will not be canceled due to rain. Applicants must successfully complete the skills test in order to be considered for employment.

Applications and supplements will be reviewed and eligible applicants will be placed on a recruitment summary list. From this list, applicants will be required to attend the skills testing and interview on April 13, 2013. All applicants will be notified of their status by the aquatics office following skills testing. Final selections will be made by the Aquatics Coordinator as designated by the department Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Minimum Qualification(s) Required. Valid Lifeguard Certification (LGT) requires individuals to be at least 15 years of age, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification, and Water Safety, or Swim Lesson Instructor Certification (WSI) requires individuals to be at least 16 years of age by hire date.
Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
Preferred/Desirable Qualification(s). Some (6 months - 1 year) experience in performing the duties of a Lifeguard and instructing swimming classes.
