Under immediate supervision, performs routine semi-skilled construction, building maintenance or grounds maintenance work; does related work as required.

Examples of Duties:

Constructs and disassembles coliseum seating and stage scenery; set-ups and tears down all production lighting and sound equipment; repairs broken equipment (benches, playground equipment, score boards, etc.); sweeps, mops and waxes floors; installs and maintains park equipment; repairs roofs on small buildings; distributes weed killer, plants grass and applies fertilizer throughout turf areas; repairs fences, tennis nets and wind-screens throughout the Park and Recreation system; mows and trims grass and shrubs; repairs broken windows, locks, chairs, desks and tables; moves equipment from one location to another; participates in construction and repair of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; lays and fits pipes; cuts and breaks up concrete and asphalt pavement; excavates dithces to grade; cleans and swaps City streets; may occasionally operate heavier types of motorized equipment, such as backhoes, loaders, rollers and other equipment of comparable complexity in Utilities; assists in the excavating, grading and shoring up of trenches for the installation or maintenance of water and sewer mains or services; assists in location leaks; assists in making taps to pipelines and installs and repairs sewer valves, hydrants, meters and pipes of all sizes; flushes, balls or rods sewer lines. Loads junk, debris and bulky waste onto truck with pitch fork or by hand; maunually collects and gathers trash, rubbish, junk, old appliances, old furniture, etc. from private premises and at illegal dump sites. Mows and trims grass and shrubs on business/residential lots; uses standard tools and equipment of trade; cleans and cares for tools and equipment.

Typical Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of eleventh grade and considerable experience in buildings and grounds maintenance work.

General knowledge of the methods and practices of buildings and grounds maintenance; general knowledge of electrical and mechanical repair work; ability to follow instructions and to complete satisfactorily assigned tasks in a timely manner; ability to work long hours under sometimes adverse weather conditions.

Supplemental Information:

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
