To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks and storm drains.

Functions & Duties:
As Maintenance Worker-Streets:
Perform street maintenance duties: operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks; tractors; and loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets; sidewalks and catch basins.

Spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets.

Inspect and cut roadside shoulders and weed all needed areas.

Responsible for pick sticking all roadside shoulder debris Citywide and on all City trails.

Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operate a jackhammer, form, pour and finish concrete.

Maintain storm drains, catch basins and storm drainpipes.

Paint or stencil such traffic directional markings such as crosswalks, safety loading zones, parking and centerlines, and school crossings.

Paint and stripe barricades and guardrails, brush and spray-paint.

Operate striping machine as needed.

Maintain, clean, and repair painting equipment and stencils.

Set up proper pattern of cones and signs to control traffic for safety purposes.

Paint light poles.

Install and repair stop signs, parking signs, speed signs.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Competencies:
High School Diploma or GED.

Some working knowledge of asphalt and oils; methods and techniques used for patching and sealing.

Some knowledge of procedures and techniques of concrete and asphalt work.

Learn skilled tasks in streets and traffic sign/paint work.

Ability to learn a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools.

Ability to work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other environments.

Ability to work independently and with a work crew.

Six (6) months to one (1) year experience preferred.

May be required to operate trucks, aerial trucks, power saws, hand tools, safety equipment and other hydraulic and gas powered equipment.

Possess a valid state of Florida Class “B” CDL driver’s license with an acceptable driving record or must be able to obtain Class “B” CDL within six (6) months of employment.

Ability to perform strenuous labor in all weather conditions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, officials, and the general public.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to permit working overhead, and with equipment or objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Must be able to read instructions, write simple reports, visually determine that work is being done correctly, differentiate colors, and hear instructions given in a quiet or noisy environment.

Working Conditions:
Must be able to work outdoors under hot and humid conditions with constant exposure to radiant energy. May be exposed to toxic fumes, caustic chemicals, various wildlife and vermin.

A person in this position must be able to walk, sit, climb ladders, kneel, bend, reach, push and or pull, lift and lower, handle, feel and grasp tools and equipment and make minor repairs.

Must be able to move and / or carry heavy objects for short and long distances
