FutureMakers is presently developing a new kind of out-of-school-time learning experience - for young makers between the ages of 6 and 15. We’re looking for exceptional makers who teach, and teachers who make - we call them Maker Educators, or Meta Makers. You're creators, designers, tinkerers, technologists, artists - who invent awesome learning experiences for young makers. You identify the design thinking challenges, materials and tools you can teach with, a scope and sequence you imagine the experience happening within, and anticipated outcomes for the young makers you'll work with.

Levels Taught: 1st - 8th grades, in- or out-of-school time settings.

Class size: minimum 5, maximum 20

Instructional Team: You will most often work with another Maker-in-Residence as a co-facilitator, or, if you're applying as a team, instructional collaborator. You are both responsible for dreaming up and supporting a common workshop plan. Together, you will plan, instruct, and assess your project's progress. On site, you report to our partner site manager. Class Schedules: We develop programs that take place in community centers, libraries, schools and private homes. The majority of our programs take place in the after-school hours of 3:00 - 7:00 PM, but some take place outside of those hours, or on weekend days. Schedules are planned and discussed in advance, and are fixed.

Position Type: Part time to Full time. Perfect for graduate students or individuals with flexible shcdules. You will be hired as an employee, not a contractor.

Compensation: $20 - $25 / hr. per maker, depending on experience. All group planning and professional development time is paid, at $15 / hr.

Job Requirements/Responsibilities:

•Readiness to apply your skills as a Maker-Educator to plan, prep, and present workshops that include digital fabrication, product design, basic electronics, traditional woodworking, manufacturing technology, soft circuits and sculpture, sewing, physical computing and a range of tinkering and experimental programs. • Must be adaptable, flexible, and enthusiastic while interacting with groups of elementary and middle school students in informal settings.
• Ability to assess your progress and troubleshoot challenges.
• Ability to work collaboratively with an co-facilitator
• Reliable transportation - the majority of sites we serve are not accessible by public transportation.
• Afternoon availability, on school days and some weekends (all scheduling is agreed in advance).

Candidate requirements:
• 1+ years of in-classroom instructional experience, education students encouraged to apply.
• Familiarity with elementary and / or middle school student needs and interests.
• Experience as a maker in a variety of media - a huge plus.
• Description or images of your skills as a maker - engineer, technologist, tinkerer, woodworker, fabricator, sculptor, visual artist or craftsperson.
• Excellent interpersonal skills - with youth, peers, supervisors and parents.
• References that tell your story as a teacher / maker - your students, supervisors or other instructors.

FutureMakers is a new hands-on mobile makerspace for grade and middle school students in the counties surrounding Baltimore and Washington, D.C. We ignite curiosity and build skills among young makers - hands-on problem solvers who tinker, build and thoughtfully play - using traditional hand tools and cutting-edge technology. Developed by a maker and a team of special educators, FutureMakers bridges the applied learning gap in elementary and middle schools in Maryland. We believe kids make things better.
