Basic Job Concept:

Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Transportation Department and providing the highest level of service to all customers. Coaches, trains & develops the department staff. Serves as the role model for the department, promoting teamwork, ownership, cooperation and accountability. Leads the department in developing processes, procedures and controls to provide the best possible service in the most cost effective manner. Owns and ensures adherence to all methods and procedures. Monitor and recommend expense controls and measures that ensure the highest levels of production. Duties include but are not limited to ensuring all drivers, files and trucks are DOT compliant. Evaluate manpower, route efficiency, and driver performance. Work with other departments within company to adequately ensure that we are providing superior customer service which encompasses delivery times, quality and representation.

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Secondary education preferred.


  • Experience Requirements:

  • Two (2) years minimum experience as a Delivery driver.
  • Two (2) years minimum as a Driver Supervisor/Manager.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience managing others.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of D.O.T. regulations & proven ability to maintain a safe fleet operation.
  • Thorough understanding of controlled dispatching, routing and loop concept.
  • Proven ability to motivate, develop, train and discipline associates.
  • Basic knowledge of computer programs and functions including Windows, Microsoft Office and AS400 applications.
  • Class B CDL required.


  • Specific Responsibilities:

  • Maximizes Department Service Levels - works through the department management staff to provide the highest level of service while minimizing costs, concerns and safety related issues. Manages the development and implementation of dispatch & routing plans to achieve desired performance and service-related goals. Gains and maintains cross functional support to achieve desired results. Optimizes routing to effectively reduce delivery expense. Oversees new customer set-up, routing and delivery windows.
  • Emphasizes Customer Service - visits customers to establish good working relationships. Manages installation of Key Drops and facilitates new Key Drop customers. Facilitates and manages delivery instruction(s) to ensure proper service levels.
  • Monitors and Improves Department Operations - uses quality improvement processes to assess department results and lead the department management team in attaining the desired results. Leverages technology to attain cost, safety and service objectives. Holds department management staff accountable to business objectives. Conducts regular meetings to address department issues. Develops and implements action plans to meet department and organizational strategic goals.
  • Audits Department Performance - Performs periodic assessments and audits in all areas to identify and address operational, safety and service issues to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. Follows up to ensure proper methods and procedures are followed. Maintains strict adherence to code of conduct and compliance programs. Ensure associates are held accountable to all Work Rules and company policies and procedures.
  • Maintains Positive Employee Relationships - Develops and maintains good working relationships with all employees. Administers and addresses employee issues. Encourages on-going discussions and meetings to address employee concerns and Workforce Climate Survey issues to improve employee morale.
  • Promotes Individual and Organizational Development - Promotes team learning and growth by working with department team members to develop a well rounded employee. Provides challenging assignments and appropriate training to strengthen operational and management skills. Responsible for self development on all issues, trends and technology that affect the success of the department. Trains and develops new hires and existing staff to ensure the highest level of understanding, safety practice, and procedural excellence is achieved.
  • Manages all facets of vehicle maintenance including vehicle rotation, preventative maintenance scheduling and fleet availability/scheduling.
  • Prepare annual budget for the Fleet.
  • Manages all facets of Safety including; DriveCam, Coach Cards (PWM Adherence) Accident Investigation, Hazard Analysis, DVIR compliance etc.
  • Administer ABC compensation program - ensure program is maintained and active within department. Responsible for timely submittal of payroll and payroll related information for the transportation associates and managers to HR. To include vacation scheduling, time off request forms, daily scheduling and ADP final approvals.
  • Manages department related reporting in a timely manner to ensure reporting expectations are met consistently.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

  • Commercial Drivers’ License, Class A or B. preferred
  • Ability to motivate, train and develop, and discipline subordinates.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle crisis situations effectively.


  • Physical Requirements:

    The Physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to perform the essential functions of this job.   • Must be able to pass D.O.T. physical, stay D.O.T. certified and keep a valid Class “A” or “B” CDL.
  • Stand for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, squat, turn body, and walk.
  • Lift and move cases (selecting product and placing on a pallet) ranging in weight up to 75 lbs continuously to and from heights ranging from floor to knee, waist, shoulder, and overhead.
  • Use hands and fingers to peel and stick labels on cases.
  • Handle and feel objects and/or equipment controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must have the ability to talk and hear; and hear warning horns on moving machinery and equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required to perform this job include close and distance vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must exhibit a high level of endurance, energy, and strength to successfully perform position.


  • Work Environment:

    While performing the duties of this job, an associate regularly works near moving mechanical apparatus and is regularly exposed to vibration and moderate to high noise levels. The work environment includes congested and high traffic areas, slippery floors, working alongside forklifts, single pallet jacks, electric walk behind jacks and hand carts. Walking and working is done on concrete flooring. Some duties are performed in the warehouse and will require work to be done in varying climates. Temperatures range from zero in the coolers to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or above outdoors. The shift end-time fluctuates with the employer’s daily needs. The associate occasionally works in high and precarious places.
