Manager – USA Tax Compliance

Job Summary

Reporting to the Controller - USA, the Manager – Tax Compliance is responsible for supplying direction to the US business units on all matters relating to US federal and state tax compliance and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Prepares all necessary US tax returns and filings, including but not limited to:

US federal and state corporate income tax returns for the US business units
Quarterly federal excise tax reports
Heavy highway vehicle use tax returns
1099s
Annual non-resident withholding tax reports together with forms 1099 for resident withholdings
Treaty based returns for the Canadian parent
1099 filings for vendors or other recipients
Any other necessary filings

Acts as first point of contact to the US and state tax authorities for audit related matters
Builds process & liaises with other support functions of the business to ensure customers and suppliers are mapped correctly for tax within the financial systems
Acts as a business partner to Sanjel (USA) departments such as Payroll, Procurement and Client Solutions to advise as requested with matters such as federal, state, and local tax compliance and identification of tax reduction opportunities
Prepares quarterly US tax provisions for inclusion in the consolidated financial statements
Reviews and ensures timely filing of monthly sales, use, and well tax returns for multiple states
Confirms tax balances in the financial statements on a monthly basis, providing timely/accurately prepared monthly reconciliations to the Manager – USA Financial Reporting
Provides technical research and support to the Canadian based Corporate Service unit Tax department on US related structuring and planning
Prepares and coordinates documentation necessary for the US business units to maximize tax incentives in current and proposed state jurisdictions
Assists with completion of the annual business personal property tax returns with timely filings for potential dispute negotiations
Mentors the US Tax Analyst
Provides guidance on the implementation and maintenance of the US sales and use tax software
Develops a working knowledge of SBS
Works with third party professionals, as directed by the Sanjel Corporation Director of Tax
Other duties as assigned

Work Environment / Physical Abilities

While performing the duties of this job the employee will spend a majority of the time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions, such as an office or storage facility. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outside weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk; reach with hands and arms, manage and lift up to 100 pounds, and maneuver mechanical equipment in a confined space. The vision requirements include: close vision, far vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Previous Experience and Competencies

Legally authorized to work in the US
BS in Accounting
Professional accounting designation (CPA) required, preferably attained in a mid-size / big ‘4’ practice environment
Minimum 3 years of experience in a managerial position
Experience in the oilfield service sector is an advantage
Must have excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills
Must be detail orientated and able to prioritize
Ability to solve special problems or challenges related to field or equivalent area
Proven ability to organize, plan and manage multiple priorities and assignments under tight deadlines
Established commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
Ability to communicate effectively and with all levels within and outside of the organization
Strong leadership skills that include planning, organization, team building, influencing, problem solving, judgment skills and ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
Working knowledge of any of the following software would be considered an advantage (Microsoft Dynamics AX, One Source tax return software and CCH Sales Tax Office)
Microsoft Office experience is a requirement
Continuing educational development in the Accounting field
A strong sense of integrity
