The position will be responsible for analyzing, reconciling, and processing motor fuel excise tax returns, payments, refunds, billings, licenses and general ledger account activities. Relevant accounting topics include tax regulations, A/R & inventory valuation, and inter-company transactions. This position will also be occasionally asked to significantly contribute to and / or lead special projects, such as systems upgrades & implementations
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Review motor fuel excise tax and fee returns and payments for 7-Eleven, Inc., and its subsidiaries.
•Respond to inquiries from tax authorities.
•Understand complex fuel transactions, reports, and activities to collect, remit and report taxes and fees to the appropriate authorities.
•Manage a small team of tax accountants.
•Assist staff in resolving system and/or processing issues.
•Develop and retain high potential talent to support the company's growth and strategic initiatives.
•Cultivate a team culture that regularly recognizes contributions.
•Fill open positions with upgraded skill-sets, specifically for technical accounting functions.
•Build organizational bench strength.
•Prepare, analyze, and evaluate motor fuel tax transactions and journal entries using accounting programs.
•Identify problems, analyze the causes, and resolve.
•Ensure proper documentation of all journal entries.
•Monitor tax rate and law changes related to the motor fuel industry.
•Use discretion to scrutinize fuel transactions for unusual/extraordinary transactions, investigate findings and provide resolution.
•Communicate discrepancies and concerns directly with customers and vendors.
•Assist with motor fuel tax audits including recording and compiling information for audit support, creating worksheets, statements, charts, etc. per audit guidelines, and assessing audit results.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education: Masters and CPA preferred
Experience: 5+, GAAP, EDI, Audit
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required to understand and appropriately respond to a variety of business process issues
Strong written and oral communication skills are required to prepare process documentation and resolve various vendor transmission invoice issues
The position also requires strong computer skills in both legacy mainframe and PC applications. Microsoft Office programs (particularly Word and Excel) are heavily used
Strong organizational skills are required to identify and prioritize deadlines across multiple assignments
Working knowledge (or the desire to obtain such working knowledge) of federal, state, and local taxing authorities and regulations is highly desirable
