Manager, Corporate Tax Compliance

REPORTS TO: Director, Corporate Tax & Payroll

Medical Mutual has an immediate need for a Manager, Corporate Tax Compliance. The Manager will report directly to the Director, Corporate Tax & Payroll.

• Oversees the preparation of tax returns and related reports of Medical Mutual of Ohio and its subsidiaries to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local tax statutes and regulations through proper interpretation of tax laws and regulations to appropriately minimize tax liability.
• Ensures timeliness and accuracy of all related tax payments.
• Oversees the application of tax accounting principles required for financial statement purposes to provide proper application of those principles to meet all required reporting guidelines under GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
• Has responsibility for the accuracy and timely completion of accounting for income taxes for all GAAP and statutory financial statements.
• Organizes and oversees tax research and tax compliance activities. Identifies potential tax impacts of changes in business, activities, and laws.
• Coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Corporate Tax Department.
• Oversees the tax department and ensures it is adequately staffed, producing high quality work, and meeting deadlines. Responsible for building and maintaining a high quality productive team.
Tax Accounting
• Prepares and reviews calculations and journal entries for federal, state and local income, franchise, property, sales and use, and excise/license taxes reflected in monthly financial statements. Reviews all related account reconciliations.
• Prepares provision to return adjustments and inter-company tax settlements.
• Maintains a thorough understanding of all differences between book and tax balances in accordance with both Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Manages the Model Audit Rule (MAR) processes for the tax area processes and procedures.
• Prepares and reviews quarterly and annual current and deferred tax provisions in accordance with SSAP 10 and ASC 740 (formerly FAS 109) through all journal entry posting, tax footnote disclosures and other statutory schedules required for NAIC filings.
• Acts as tax department contact with external auditors (i.e. EY, State Departments of Insurance). Acts as a positive, professional representative of the Company and Finance Department.
• Prepares quarterly analysis used in management’s review of tax provisions.
• Actively manages the day-to-day activities of tax staff; delegates work assignments, oversees staff development needs, provides coaching to staff, completes annual performance appraisals, determines merit increases, sets annual performance goals.
Tax Compliance and Strategy
• Manages complex tax assignments and assumes responsibility for research, analysis, and application of all applicable laws and statutes primarily in the preparation of local, state, and federal tax returns of medical Mutual of Ohio and its subsidiaries, ensuring corporate compliance with prescribed rates, laws and regulations. Acts as primary company contact regarding tax inquiries, notices or other communications with taxing jurisdictions.
• Prepares all federal estimated tax deposits and wire transfers in coordination with Treasury.
• Researches federal tax issues for compliance and other tax purposes, remains current regarding all changes in tax law and related ramifications to assess the impact of any given change, anticipates changes to tax laws and analyzes any potential implications relevant to medical Mutual of Ohio and its subsidiaries.
• Actively manages the day-to-day activities of tax staff; delegates work assignments, oversees staff development needs, provides coaching to staff, completes annual performance appraisals, determines merit increases, sets annual performance goals.
• Direct supervision of a department, involving responsibility for results in terms of budget management, methods, personnel and policy development.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field.
• Graduate degree and other certification, including a Master's degree in Taxation (MT or MST), or a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA, Accounting / Finance), a Law degree and / or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification preferred.
• Six (6) to ten (10) years progressively responsible experience.
• In-depth technical knowledge of existing laws and regulations as they relate to the insurance industry preferred.
• Demonstrated proficiency in a job related field of concentration with specialized skill exercising logic to distinguish fact from opinion, define and analyze problems, draw conclusions, evaluate solutions and communicate complex concepts.
• Knowledge of GAAP and Statutory Accounting.
• Significant tax and financial experience, including an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the inter-relationships of tax to financial reporting (GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles.)
• Significant technical ability and base of knowledge of existing federal, state and local tax laws and regulations, particularly as they relate to the insurance industry.
• Ability to identify tax issues and conduct research using sophisticated tax research products. Experience using various tax preparation software packages.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence executive-level decision makers.
• Strong organizational, people, and multitasking skills.
• Demonstrated managerial and leadership skills.
• Performs work in an office environment.
