Manager, Derivative Accounting & SOX

The Manager of Derivative Accounting and SOX is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the workflow of a six member team relating to the mark-to-market and accrual accounting activities for Luminant Energy’s Commercial Operations in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and in compliance with good internal accounting controls. The role is responsible for leading the development of effective internal controls and efficient key controls monitoring in addition to the settlement of financial products. Luminant Energy transacts in physical and financial derivative transactions in conjunction with the operation of Luminant’s power generation portfolio. The business utilizes a variety of commodities including natural gas, power, coal and fuel oil to manage risk.

Description & Responsibilities:
Leads monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting close processes for trading and hedging activities
Leads and reviews monthly and quarterly internal and external financial reporting requirements, including disclosures and analysis for SEC filings, quarterly earnings analysis, cash flow statement analysis and ad-hoc reporting requests
Works closely with Risk Management and Commercial teams on profit and loss reporting, financial close process, and derivative valuation issues
Manages team deliverables and escalation of issues
Understands mark-to-market concepts and accounting, including price and position change impacts on the value of a commodity portfolio
Manages Sarbanes Oxley compliance program
Provides guidance to Luminant Energy on effective internal control processes and manages the resolution of control issues
Participates in the review and resolution of technical accounting issues associated with new transactions, implementation of new accounting standards, changes to accounting policies and practices
Leads problem solving efforts on complex, emerging operational and strategic issues
Manages the financial settlement process
Develops a team of employees to be proficient in accounting for and analyzing energy trading and hedging activities
Actively identifies and implements process improvements for all aspects of the financial close and reporting process to gain efficiencies

Minimal background / knowledge requirements:
6 years of relevant business experience in accounting with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
4 years of experience in the competitive energy industry, other deregulated markets or traditional utility with competitive subsidiaries
Technical accounting experience with derivative transactions
In-depth understanding of financial statements (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement)
Ability to work across multiple functional groups within the Company and develop strong working relationships
Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with emphasis on issue identification, structuring approach and resolution
Strong quantitative skills and business acumen
Highly organized, very detailed, and deadline oriented
Has good interpersonal and delegation skills and the ability to effectively communicate and set priorities
Is good with dealing with ambiguity, can effectively manage conflict and is assertive in pursuing the most difficult issues and bringing them to quick but thorough resolution
Employs a high standard of quality in completing assignments
Proficiency in MS Excel, Word
Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplined, cross-functional and collaborative team environment

Preferred background and knowledge requirements:
CPA preferred
Experience in energy or other commodity markets
Experience with PeopleSoft G/L softwareManagement experience

Working Conditions

Occasional long, irregular hours
Consistent use of a PC, computer terminal and/or telephone over 3 hours a day
Occasional bending, twisting, crouching, pulling, pushing, and/or reaching to access job-related materials
Open workspace office environment.
