The Marine Fisheries Observer will work on alternative platform vessels and onboard commercial fishing vessels throughout the estuarine waters of North Carolina. duties include the collection, coding and proofing of recreational and commercial catch, bycatch data, protected species interactions and fishing gear specifications. The observer must be able to work independently, scheduling trips with fisherman and identifying areas where fishing is occurring. The observer must have strong boating and navigation skills and knowledge of marine fish and sea turtle identification. Overnight travel will be required. Duration of this temporary position will be approximately eleven months and located in the Morehead City, area.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
General knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures of fisheries management; general knowledge of estuarine and marine species of fish, crabs, shrimp, and mollusk; ability to operate and maintain boats, motors, sampling gear, and related equipment; ability to prepare and maintain reports and records; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with Division personnel, commercial and recreational fishing industry, and the general public.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Associate's degree in fisheries management from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the fisheries industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with vessel operation may be required.
