The Social Work Internship Program is an exciting learning and field experience for MSW students who wish to experience working in a front-line youth development agency. Students will be providing direct practice services to an at-risk adolescent population, within the areas of academic and career development, case management, individual and group counseling and community building.
The Door offers several field placement sites which are accredited by the major schools of social work located in New York City. Most internships are required to be one academic year, from September through May. The Door also offers some summer internship program opportunities.
Field placement sites vary in concentration and are located in the following departments/programs:
Social work interns are included in agency sponsored staff training and development to enhance their knowledge and skill levels in the areas of youth development practice, assessments, case management, treatment and service planning and the application of Evidence Based Programs.
- Educational/Vocational Services Department
- Legal Services Department
- Human Resources Department
- Counseling Program
- Runaway and Homeless Youth Services Program.
There is the expectation that social work interns will function in various capacities providing ongoing treatment, intake and assessments, treatment and discharge planning and case record management activities. Social work interns in the Counseling Center and Homeless and Runaway Youth Programs are provided with group work experience and case conferencing. Individual clinical and group supervision are provided.
The Door regularly accepts social work interns from Columbia, Fordham and NYU as well as from other accredited schools of social work. We advise that students enrolled in graduate schools of social work contact their field placement units to explore opportunities for placements at The Door.
