Mechanical Design Engineer

Location Design Development Center - Hudson, WI

Responsibilities
  • Operate primary CAD systems such as SolidWorks, ProEngineer, Unigraphics and/or CATIA,
  • Perform complex surfacing and develop design and assembly strategies for products involving multiple components (plastic and non-plastic)
  • Maintain budget control on proprietary projects
  • Interface with customers, sales representatives, Phillips’ manufacturing facilities, and vendors to achieve the highest quality design at the most economical cost
  • Support project engineers and customer needs (accountable for meeting project timelines and ensuring actions support project budgets)
  • Serve as a consultant to design and production resources on engineering related issues and components as required
  • Manage engineering documentation of analysis and mechanical testing
  • Develop and maintain database of proprietary stress/strain curve information
  • Understand the behavior of plastics as it relates to mechanics, function and creep
  • Analyze designs for structural considerations
  • Understand, teach, and ensure database security is achieved through archiving and backing up databases
  • Effective use of reporting systems in place to capture and monitor project costs
  • Proactively involve support resources in brainstorming or concept development to ensure all options are considered
  • Effectively communicate issues and sound options via documentation that includes screen dumps that specifically identify concerns and issues
  • Manage multiple projects and/or challenging projects with many unknowns
Qualifications - Education & Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years' expereince with primary emphasis on product design, plastic injection molding, as well as early involvement services.
  • Demonstrated superior experience in at least one major CAD platform as well the ability to design in at least one other CAD platform (i.e. ProEngineer, Unigraphics, Catia, or SolidWorks) or to possess specific expertise in a focused area (complex surfacing, tolerance studies, assembly studies, gage or fixture design, RPTech tool design, or lend support to FEA, Moldflow, and/or Technology Center resources)

Qualifications - Skills & Competencies
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of injection molded plastic part design and mechanical component and assembly design
  • Demonstrates strong ability to evaluate and recommend appropriate prototyping processes (i.e. SLA, SLS, machining)
  • Understanding of the behavior of plastics as it relates to mechanics, function and creep
  • Strong ability to think outside of box, and assist others in doing so
  • Solid understanding of the requirements for injection molds, material options, and processing parameters for multiple technologies
  • Ability to define, create and interpret mechanical drawings
  • Proficient in computer tools and systems (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, GroupWise etc.)
  • Willingness to assist others in sharing knowledge to increase proficiency
  • Well respected within Phillips Plastics and externally for technical knowledge, expertise, and competency (a “go-to-person”)
  • Maintain in a professional demeanor at all times in speech, dress and attitude
  • Possesses multiple skill sets to increase flexibility and effectively adjust to workload shifts (ability to design in multiple CAD platforms, use FEA, support and manage design projects, split out RPTech tools, etc.)
  • Demonstrated understanding of policies that support ISO 9000 and Best Practices (STEPS)
  • Maintains and respects customer, project, and program confidentiality
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to manage multiple tasks
  • Superior ability to generate ideas, create part geometry and address product requirements during the concept and refinement phases
  • Proven history of providing innovative design solutions
  • Solid competency in communication skills and teamwork and willingness to continue education to keep abreast of advances in technology
  • Complete understanding of the design process from concept through manufacturing
  • Ability to travel 10% - 20% of time
