Position: Mechanical Engineer – Design & Analysis

Responsibilities:
Develops designs for complete and complex engineering systems, structures, and vehicle arrangements based on system level requirements.

Produces detailed solid models of components and/or systems that can be used for both parametric analysis (FEA and CFD) as well as for built-to-print engineering drawings.

Performs Finite Element Analysis for both structural and thermal applications.

Plans, organizes, and coordinates own work across multiple simultaneous sub-projects.

Collects, reads, interprets, and uses related reference documents and drawings prepared by other disciplines, vendors, or outside sources and incorporate them into the design.

Performs structural and thermal hand calculations and evaluation to quickly evaluate design concepts and identify critical design parameters for optimization.

Reads and helps develop Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs).

Prepare and present reports of findings and generate design drawings and related documentation.

Work with component vendors and systems assemblers to generate innovative designs with manufacturability in mind

Work may include assistance with physical assembly or construction of some components and/or systems and/or test set-ups.

Job Scope:
75% Modeling, analysis (CFD & FEA), and drawing creation

10% review of designs, analysis and system arrangements.

10% Hands-on/manufacturing: Assisting with assembly or builds, and designing tooling to assist with builds.

5% Project management and vendor support

Qualifications:
Education: Minimum: BSME from accredited program. BSME and MSME are preferred.

Experience: Well-rounded hands-on mechanical engineer with five or more years of industry experience in mechanical, fluid, and thermal design and analysis. (May also include related academic work.)

Candidate should have / be:
Very familiar with stress analysis and parametric solid modeling.

Understanding of fuel cell systems would be helpful.

Experience with materials, gas flows, and equipment at for high temperature applications ( >1000F) desirable.

Experience with cryogenics, especially liquid oxygen desirable.

Test experience, especially with LabView would be beneficial.

Experience with naval power systems and/or other DoD or military systems is beneficial.

Experience with starting with basic requirements and developing a complete packaged mechanical system, including modeling, analysis, building, and testing is highly desirable.

Product development and project management experience preferred.

Must have excellent understanding of basic structural and thermodynamic principles and able to quickly bound a problem or check the feasibility of a design by doing hand calculations.

Autodesk Inventor solid modeling experience. Working knowledge of CFD and FEA (SolidWorks Simulation, or preferably Fluent and Ansys).

Ability to create build-to-print drawings and understanding of ANSI Y14.5 dimensioning desirable.

Technical work should be backed-up with good engineering judgment as well as appropriate thermodynamic and/or structural hand calculations, confirmed with CAD models and FEA/CFD.
