The role: Mechanical Engineer, Cameras
Our computational challenges are so big and unique we can't just buy our hardware, we've got to make it ourselves. Our Platforms Team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services. As a Mechanical Engineer you design and evaluate our data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. From the chip to chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google's continued growth.

With your technical expertise, you lead and manage projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others and help facilitate training and development.

Over the years, the Camera Systems Team has developed a myriad of cameras for multiple projects such as Google Street View or the Google Art Project and is looking for an experienced engineer in the design, manufacturing and calibration of high precision optical systems. In this critical position, you will be part of exciting fast-paced projects. Your role will include working as a team with mechanical, hardware and software engineers to tackle challenging design issues while improving existing manufacturing processes. The most successful candidate for the role will have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills specifically in the field of complex mechanical systems operating in harsh environments. An experience as a system engineer in a multi-disciplinary project and in a startup-like environment involving optics, mechanical integration, hardware and software and overall qualification would be a clear plus.

Responsibilities:
Design systems touching multiple mechanical engineering fields: structure, heat transfers, EMI, optics... and certification
Design, specify and manage manufacturing of lab and assembly line equipment; Specify, evaluate and qualify high precision mechanical parts and assemblies.
Respond to and resolve emergent problems, build tools to improve current processes, Write assembly and calibration procedures and train technicians with the help of Manufacturing Engineers.
Issue Requests For Quote and manage contract manufacturers
Review and influence new and evolving designs, standards and methods

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics or related field (In lieu of degree, 7 years of relevant work experience).
Technical troubleshooting experiences. Also has experience in design using CAD, simulations using FEA software package on structural and heat transfer problems, and one programming language like Matlab.
Strong experience in lab measurements, data extraction/analysis.

Preferred qualifications:
MS/Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or System Engineering with less than 5 years of relevant working experience.
Well versed in the core mechanical engineering analytical skills, including excellent facility with structural and thermal analysis techniques for high precision systems.
Experience working in multidisciplinary small team with proven leadership skills on managing contract manufacturers and experts.
Experience with optical systems in harsh environment (milspec, aerospace equipment...)
Familiar with object oriented programming and GUI design in C++ or python.
Excellent oral communication skills, with strong presentation skills.
