Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Public Relations, the Media & Public Relations Intern is a part-time position located in San Diego, CA. The Media & Public Relations Intern will support the overall goals and communication activities of Bridgepoint Education, Ashford University and University of the Rockies. He/she will participate in numerous responsibilities to include the research and development of a variety of communication vehicles, as well as other projects and duties related to the company’s communication efforts.

Chief functions will include the primary support of the Media Relations Manager and the Public Relations Specialist, plus supplementary support of all other Public Relations team members as they work to carry out the company’s strategic goals. Duties and responsibilities include research, media support and the development of both internal and external written materials and videos.

This position is one of support, yet integral to the success of the Public Relations department. The Media & Public Relations Intern will work closely with PR team members and, possibly, with other departments within Bridgepoint Education, Ashford University and University of the Rockies. Outstanding interpersonal skills are required to perform this job. Superior written and verbal communication is necessary, as is a demonstrated ability to analyze, plan, initiate and complete assigned projects and tasks on a timely basis.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Provide general assistance to the Media Relations Manager and the Public Relations Specialist to include employee relations, media relations, and public relations services
  • Serve as a “fact finder” and researcher for Public Relations department, and all other requesting departments and PR team members
  • Act as a roving internal reporter, able to generate story ideas and write various communications pieces to include news releases, media statements, and articles
Additional Job Duties (include but are not limited to):
  • Work closely with the PR department’s writers on specific assignments and provide video and photo support
  • Participate in PR projects which may require occasional local travel to the company’s various San Diego locations
  • Assist with daily PR department responsibilities and tasks, including administrative

Minimum Requirements:
  • Familiarity with local media outlets and contacts (regional and national a plus)
  • Write, with little or no supervision, applying AP style and standard rules of grammar
  • Excellent proofreading and communication skills

Education:
  • Prefer: Recent college graduate with a degree in the field of Public Relations, Journalism and/or Communications
  • Will consider: Current college student majoring in the field of Public Relations, Journalism and/or Communications (4th year student is preferred)

The employee will be required to make judgment decisions and adapt to changing work situations, grasp and apply new ideas, communicate with various personalities at all levels and have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions.

Work Environment: While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an office environment, and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
