AHF is searching for a Medical Assistant/Front Office Clerk/ Benefits Counselor to join our San Francisco and Oakland Healthcare Center Team. This opportunity is to work on a Full Time, Regular basis. The salary is based on experience, and we offer a competitive benefits package.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

o Meets and greets Healthcare Center patients and visitors, interfacing with them and the general public in a professional, courteous, and sensitive manner.

o Ensures smooth patient flow by ensuring prompt attention to pulling patient charts and necessary medical records.

o Assists in screening all patients to correct billing and financial information. Determines payment source based on information given (i.e., ability to pay, insurance coverage, Medi-Cal,etc.)

o Schedules Healthcare appointments and performs appropriate reminder procedures.

o Reviews patient intake materials for accuracy and completeness.

o Ensures up-to-date patient information on computer systems and patient medical records.

o Maintains stock of all Healthcare Center forms and patient brochures, keeping them organized for convenient access.

o Accepts and reconciles patient Co-payments and submits payment to the office Administrator on a daily basis.

o Verifies Benefit eligibility and scope of benefit for private pay clients, Verifies Benefit eligibility as required for Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, Private insurance, and other public assistance programs or benefits.

o Conduct patient Intake Interviews, Financial screenings, Data entry, and registration for County and state programs, AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and the Low Income Health Plan (LIHP).

o Assists with the maintenance of the office supply cabinet.

o Utilizing AHF computer information systems, provides data entry for services and billing information. Ensures that all data entry is performed daily and accurately.

o Enters all patient data into computer systems and maintains patient information systems up-to-date.

o Coordinates providers' schedules and maintains appointment templates on system, resolving any scheduling conflicts that arise.

o Sorts incoming mail and routes to appropriate staff, identifying priority materials.

o Coordinates with appropriate staff for patient referrals.

o Adheres to the policies and procedures of the Healthcare Center, the Nursing Department and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

o Documents patient's weight, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure at patient healthcare visit as ordered or per protocol.

o Collects samples such as urine, blood and stool specimens in the Healthcare Centers as ordered and instructs patients in home collection of urine, stool and sputum specimens, when appropriate.

o Performs phlebotomy as ordered and prepares specimens for transport to laboratory.

o Documents services performed for compliance and reporting purposes.

o Reviews physician orders, lab requests or follow-up needs with patient.

o Collaborates with other nursing personnel and participates as a team member. May receive laboratory results over the telephone and transmit them to the licensed nurse and the patient's medical provider in a timely manner.

o Administers Purified Protein Derivative (PPD), as ordered.

o Reports changes in patient's physical status to the Nurse Manager, other nurses or medical provider.

o Assists nursing and medical staff with examinations and procedures as assigned.

o Documents observations as requested by an MD and/or Nurse Manager in the patient's medical record.

o Receives and processes medication refill requests; verifies medication request with healthcare provider and obtains appropriate documentation.

o Ensures maintenance of patient confidentiality.

o Maintains supplies and cleanliness of examination rooms.

o Maintains logs as directed by the Nurse Manager.

o Communicates in a tactful and professional manner.

o Maintains standard precautions for infection control.

Participation in AHF Meetings/Committees

Attends AHF Staff Meetings.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program with certification; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer/Software Skills & Abilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Basic Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills & Abilities/Qualifications

Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

o Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program with certification.

o Current CPR Certification.
