Position: Medical Assistant II

Assignment: BCFS-ICS Harlingen

Reports to: Senior Medical Assistant

Status: Full Time Non Exempt

Pay Grade:

Education: High School Diploma and a program certification or registry (Ex. Certified or Registered Medical Assistant from a State or National Accreditation Body )

Experience: Two years experience in direct resident care. Experience with children or in a pediatric clinic is highly preferred.

Supervises: None

Summary: The Medical Assistant II administers treatment and medication that has been prescribed by a licensed physician or dentist to minors.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintain current knowledge of all State and Federal policies/procedures related to the medical care of residential staff.
  • Administer medications to minors as prescribed by a physician
  • Possess sensitivity to the service population (l.e. cultural and socio-economic characteristics.)
  • To work collaboratively with other program personnel, service providers, and professionals in the community
  • Establish and maintain functional relationships with the children, attending physicians, federal staff and employees
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all medications prescribed and administered to minors
  • To document all interactions with and for minors according to Federal policy and state licensing standards
  • Teach health education to minors in a group and/or in an individual setting
  • Assess each child’s unique medical needs and ensure those needs are met
  • Maintain medication files and inventory of all prescribed drugs
  • Document all pertinent information in client charts as dictated by policy and procedure
  • Admit, discharge, and transfer children from hospitals as needed
  • Coordinate medical appointments and follow through with physician’s recommendations
  • Order medication and supplies for children as needed
  • Prepares reports for Administrative review
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with minors
  • Notify Associate Executive Director, Program Director, attending physician and family when the child becomes ill or injured as directed by Medical Coordinator
  • Provide emergency services or referral for treatment immediately
  • Utilize positive child management techniques including verbal redirection, de-escalations and physical containment
  • Perform other duties as directed
  • Accompany and transport minors to medical/dental appointments
  • Submit TAR requests to Federal TMS system for medical services
  • Enter minor’s information into TMS
  • Enter child’s information into ORR TMS system
  • Other job duties as assigned
