Primary Function

The Medical Coding Specialist assists Cook’s reimbursement team in identifying and researching coding and reimbursement issues, as well as identifying correct coding and reimbursement levels for procedures in which Cook devices are used. The Medical Coding Specialist also provides support and training to the Sales and Marketing teams in addressing coding and reimbursement issues.

Essential Job Functions/ Duties
• Uses available resources (AMA, consultants, professional society coding
hotlines, etc.) to identify the correct coding (CPT, ICD-9, APC, HCPCS,
etc.) for procedures in which Cook devices are used

• Provides support to Cook customers when coding and reimbursement
questions arise in regard to the use of Cook devices

• Must work and interact effectively and professionally with and for others
throughout various levels of the global organization to achieve company

• Must strictly adhere to safety requirements

• Maintain regular and punctual attendance

• Must maintain company quality and quantity standards

• Must have effective oral and written communications throughout various
levels of the global organization

• Excellent problem solving skills and ability to work in collaborative and
independent work situations and environments with minimal supervision

• Ability to remain calm and receptive in fast paced situations Minimum Work Experience/ Educational Requirements

• Associates Degree preferred, or experience of such kind and amount as
to provide a comparable background

• Knowledge of U.S. healthcare provider payment systems (physician,
in-patient/out-patient hospital, ambulatory surgery system, etc.), with
emphasis on Medicare payment systems

• Ability to search Medicare’s national and local coverage policy
databases, along with commercial insurance medical policy databases

• Knowledge of coding systems in the U.S. healthcare payment systems:
CPT, HCPCS Level II, DRG, ICD-9 & ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure
codes, APC, pass-through codes, etc.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to perform basic internet searches
