Basic Function: The Laboratory Technologist, ASCP is responsible for performing tests, procedures, and tasks at all levels of difficulty. Draws from a core knowledge of laboratory theory, general knowledge and scientific principles to make accurate, independent judgments; works under the direction of the laboratory manager.

Requirements:

  • Certified or registry eligible with one of the following agencies: ASCP, NCA or HEW. Holds a college degree or acceptable equivalent as required by the certifying agency
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred
  • Principle Responsibilities:

  • Possesses the knowledge and skills needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide leadership. Assumes responsibility for special assignments and projects.
  • Supports decisions with strong rationale. Demonstrates ability to defend the course of action taken. Understands the current regulatory requirements, and consistently follows through on matters which require additional information.
  • Consistently organizes and executes daily tasks in proper priority, effectively adjusts daily schedule to perform urgent assignments or special projects, and assists others when appropriate to facilitate the completion of job duties.
  • Identifies opportunities for improved efficiency of operation and consistently makes sure that test results correlate with established references; questions and reports all incompatible or questionable results to the supervisor.
  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, always follows guidelines of use of personal protective equipment during sample processing and testing. Demonstrates knowledge of safe use of equipment, and verifies positive sample identification
  • Competently performs testing as assigned, reports STAT results and critical values as soon as available and documents reports as required by procedure, and attends department meetings as required, (required yearly safety/infection control meeting, etc.)
  • Communicates directly with co-workers when problems occur, assists in identifying and resolving issues.
