The receptionist position is a fast-paced job which requires accuracy, the ability to deal efficiently and courteously with all patients, while updating demographics and verifying insurance coverage. Knowledge and understanding of all insurance co-pays, Carolina Access Medicaid requirements, and Medicare products is essential. Practice Management the electronic medical record system requires skill in all aspects of EMR operations and functions. The receptionist is responsible for keeping the patients informed of wait times and will inform the clinical staff of any patient issues. Posting charges, insurance payments, demographic changes and scheduling appointments are daily functions, as well as back-up for incoming phone calls. There are several other duties which require the ability to work independently with detail-oriented ability.
Essential Job Functions
Electronically check-in each patient upon arrival for their appointment. Update demographics and insurance information and enter new information in the computer. Scan insurance cards, picture ID, etc into patient chart. Attach incoming patient information and forward to physician or assistant per office policy. Verify Carolina Access and obtain authorization if patient fails to do so. Instruct patient on their responsibility to obtain a referral from their PCP. Perform all receptionist duties which include greeting all patients and visitors immediately upon arrival. Answer phone and take messages in the EMR system, forwarding in a timely fashion to provider or assistant. Schedule appointments and make referral appointments when necessary. Assist patients with medical records requests. Post charges and receipts upon request. Take messages for walk-in patients. Maintain prescription and sample pick-ups by obtaining signature, date and time on prescription log. Distribute all incoming faxes to proper individuals. Enter demographic information on all new patients, or patients seen in Cherokee clinic. Scan all Cherokee referrals. Other job duties as assigned by the Office Manager or Office Coordinator. Obtain cross training to assist with all clerical front office positions. Order all front office supplies.

Knowledge and Skills Required/Preferred
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous medical office experience and understanding of medical terminology.
Excellent grammar skills.
Excellent customer service skills.
Computer skills and ability to use basic office equipment.
Clear understanding of HIPAA.
Ability to prioritize work load and multitask.
CMA preferred but not required. Experience is a must.
Reports to Office Manager
Has no responsibility for supervising the work of other employees .
