Each scribe shift will last the length of the physician shift and that scribe will spend the entire shift working with that physician.

She/he will shadow the assigned physician throughout the shift and the patient encounters, documenting the initial history and physical (including current meds, allergies and patient’s PCP ), re-evaluations, consultations and completing discharge paperwork (including work/school notes).

They will manage the re-evaluation process notifying the physician as diagnostic studies are resulted.

They will be trained on how to page consultants, how to obtain old EKGs.

Fill out the basics on forms, (i.e. consent forms, blood requisition forms, pelvic ultrasound forms, clinic referral forms, outside radiology over-read forms, outside records request form).

Order forms: consider dictating orders to scribes who write the orders and then have the orders verifies and signed by a physician.

Scribes will not serve as patient care technicians; employees with direct patient care require additional training (i.e. scribes serve the purpose of improving documentation efficiency, not gathering suture supplies, splinting supplies, moving patients for pelvic exams, etc.)

Scribes will not serve as HUCs; the purpose of the scribe is to assist with documentation.

Education and Experience

Seeking pre-medical students in their junior or senior year of college looking for an opportunity for clinical experience. Upon hiring, the student will provide physicians with real time documentation services. Scribes will shadow the assigned physician throughout his or her shift and document patient encounters, including the history and physical, diagnostic results, re-evaluations, consultations, and discharge paperwork.

Applicants must be:
—Proficient typists

—Premedical/pre-physician’s assistant college student in at least junior or senior standing with a strong desire to continue to medical or PA school

Must agree to one of the following, with the understanding that they will have to work some holidays:

—part time: 8-11 shifts/month with 2 year commitment

—full time: 16-18 shifts/month with 1 year commitment
