Summary: Performs chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures for which competency has been verified. Maintains in a timely manner, records of procedure performance, patient results, and quality control. Follows defined protocol for investigating out-of-control runs and implements necessary remedial action. Reviews relevant laboratory reports for extraordinary results and clerical errors before they are reported to the patient''s medical record. Maintains equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment. Participates in development of new procedures and policies. When indicated is expected to implement changes to existing procedures and provide educational updates to staff. Continuously helps to monitor job performance of peers or other employees to include participation in peer reviews and may recommend rewarding/assigning duties within scope of position responsibility. Performs secretarial, phlebotomy and specimen reception duties.

Education: Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist B.S. (ASCP), or Medical Technologist (AMT/ASCP) with B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Registry eligible/passing registry within 3 years of hire date.

Physical Requirements: Sufficient sight (includes color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function efficiently in exercising job responsibilities. Stands or sits for long periods and walks short distances for most of work shifts. Uses tools and electrical devices to repair instruments and check equipment. Able to lift 40 lbs. as required to stock reagents and various lab supplies. Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written). Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations. Works scheduled hours that include weekends, holidays, and nights as necessary.

Working Environment: Potential exposure to patients who may be physically or verbally abusive. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment during several patient and equipment related activities.
