This employment opportunity is with the Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). This is a full-time position temporarily located in Salem, Or. In early 2015 the position is slated to move to Junction City, Or. with the opening of the new hospital. This position is Management Service and is not represented by a Union.

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) is part of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), the state agency that manages Oregon’s health and health care programs. The hospital falls under OHA’s Addictions and Mental Health’s Division and provides direct psychiatric hospital care to adults from throughout Oregon who are unable to be served in a community setting.

At OSH, we put the patient first, and employees play an essential role in achieving the hospital’s vision to be a psychiatric hospital that inspires hope, promotes safety and supports recovery for all. OSH currently has 692 hospital beds on 26 treatment units and 6 residential cottages. Our Junction City facility will have a total of 174 hospital beds on 6 treatment units and 3 residential cottages. Services include psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as community outreach and peer support.

This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Duties & Responsibilities:

MANAGEMENT
  • Shares responsibility for 24 hour nursing practice on an assigned unit;
  • Collaborates with peers and supervisors in making decisions regarding nursing operations on the work unit or shift;
  • Organizes and coordinates work of subordinate staff;
  • Evaluates the work of subordinate nursing staff, and addresses performance issues as needed;
  • Acts as a resource to staff on nursing practice issues and interpretation of policies and procedures;
  • Participates in interviewing, selecting and assigning nurse staff;
  • Ensures that adequate staff to patient ratios are established and maintained and participates in problem-solving when unplanned staffing needs arise;
  • Supervises, interprets, reviews the quality of nursing services provided on the unit, taking action to address and manage issues as they arise.
CLINICAL
  • Assesses status and changes in patient condition, both physical and mental, takes appropriate action as needed;
  • Develops an individualized nursing care plan that is integrated into the patient’s treatment care plan;
  • Administers and documents medication and treatments in accordance with hospital/nursing service policies and procedures;
  • Assesses management of the therapeutic milieu and takes corrective action as appropriate;
  • Provides clinical nursing consultation as requested/needed;
  • Works with unit nursing personnel to develop individualized nursing care plans that are integrated into the patient’s treatment care plan;
  • Develops processes to support and promote continuity of care between shifts and care providers;
  • Initiates appropriate action in actual or potential psychiatric/medical emergencies;
EDUCATION
  • Ensures orientation of unit nursing personnel;
  • Assesses unit staff educational needs and acts/responds accordingly;
  • Coordinates and conducts patient/family teaching as needed;
  • Conducts in-service training/orientation of unit staff and students;
  • Completes annual mandatory education/training and ensures compliance of unit staff;
  • Supports and endorses hospital and program philosophies, policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Desired Attributes:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of nursing experience including some experience equivalent to that of a Charge Nurse. Knowledge of nursing techniques and therapeutic interventions used in care and treatment of mentally, emotionally or behaviorally impaired patients; organizational skills, ability to assign, direct, and evaluate the work of others, as well as plan and provide staff training.

At the time of appointment, applicant must possess a valid Oregon Registered Professional Nurse's license.
