R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is seeking a Microbiologist Scientist to work in a team environment managing microbiological testing requirements in support of manufacturing and R&D. Additionally, the scientist will conduct independent bench research. The scientist will serve as an internal expert on microbial issues and support routine testing. This individual must be able to perform in a highly diverse, multi-functional environment and communicate effectively to deliver against goals. In addition, the scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with Manufacturing, R&D, Innovations, Quality, and Product Integrity to solve problems, provide insight and develop scientific measures to ensure microbial testing requirements for are met.
The scientist must be able to effectively manage multiple projects and possess good time management skills in order to meet aggressive deadlines. The scientist must be able to utilize sound scientific principles to identify and respond to microbiological issues using a standard (i.e. BAM) and advanced testing methods. The candidate will be required to support routine microbiological testing as needed and strengthen capability to support RJRT across departments and processes, providing guidance for processes and decisions requiring microbial expertise. This will include identification and development of appropriate microbiological assays for specific needs. Good written and oral communication skills will be required.
Key responsibilities will include:
1. Providing technical expertise regarding microbial processes and decisions, including the development of appropriate microbiological assays for specific needs.
2. Support of routine microbiological testing.
3. Identify and respond to microbiological issues.
4. Ensure microbiology lab analyses are conducted in accordance with applicable quality system guidelines.
PhD in microbiology or food microbiology with at least 5 years experience or Masters with 10 years experience.Standard microbial test methods (i.e., BAM).
Knowledgeable in fermentation and biochemical metabolic processes preferred.
Experience with data review and statistics as they apply to microbiological data.
Methods development and validation experience.
Experience working in a regulated environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and presentation skills.
