Global Network Services (GNS) is a group within GFS that Architects, Engineers, Implements, and Operates Microsoft’s common network infrastructure globally. Microsoft’s global network is undergoing rapid expansion to support the company’s focus in online services and has become one of the largest datacenter and network infrastructures in the world. The GNS Architecture, Testing & Standards (ATS) team is directly responsible for the future of the network and provides for architectural, testing, and network standardization functions within GNS. It is the goal of the GNS team to deliver the most reliable, scalable, and cost effective network infrastructure possible.
Roles & Responsibilities:
A Network Architect in the Tactical Architecture & Standards (TAS) team is critical to the success of the overall network by developing architectural standards for new network architectures, devices, and code releases. The output of this effort directly impacts the delivery of any and all new networking technologies targeted for deployment in the production network. The TAS Network Architect is successful by ensuring technologies are adequately tested, developed, integrated, and documented such that design engineering and operations can accept the technology into the network. Each TAS Network Architect must work across a broad group of business units within Microsoft and coordinate across numerous teams within GFS.
Skills & Qualifications:
A successful candidate will skillfully and efficiently drive the execution of testing and standardization of all networking technologies destined for production in Microsoft’s network. The candidate must be knowledgeable across a broad range of network technologies including routing, switching, transport, load balancers, firewalls, and many other technologies found in large-scale service provider networks. The candidate must be adept a managing numerous projects with conflicting priorities and significant ambiguity. The candidate must be a strong written and oral communicator with very strong organizational and time-management skills.
The candidate must have previously been deeply involved in the design, engineering, and architecture of large-scale service provider network infrastructures for at least 6 years. The candidate must have a solid understanding of the vendors in the service provider networking industry, the products that are offered, and experience in negotiating product purchases with these vendors. The candidate must have a basic understanding of automation of large scale testing and deployment of networking devices and network architectures. Experience in software development concepts and scripting are helpful.
