Under the direction of physicians licensed to possess radioactive materials, utilizes radionuclides and radio-pharmaceuticals to perform diagnostic examinations - including radionuclidic imaging of organs and organ systems of patients and dynamic studies. These responsibilities require extensive knowledge of the field of nuclear medicine technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and biomedical sciences that relate to Nuclear Medicine Technology. The incumbent also assists the physician in therapeutic procedures using radionuclides. Work is performed independently and reviewed by the Chief Technologist.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, physics, chemistry, radiation safety, radiobiology and computer applications as well as nuclear medicine equipment, techniques, and procedures at a level generally acquired through completion of an approved two year program in Nuclear Medicine Technology, plus three to six months of experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Registration as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist or licensure by the State of Maine is required.

  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures as well as proficiency in performing nuclear medicine procedures at a level generally acquired during three to six months on-the-job training and experience.

  • Analytical ability to identify pathology/structures and image such appropriately and identify areas requiring further investigation. Must be able to set up equipment properly, prepare patient for such procedures, and ensure all safety and health precautions are followed.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to explain procedures to patients to allay apprehensions and elicit their cooperation. Must interact effectively with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
