Associate's Degree

Registry/PRN Nursing position for EXPERIENCED OR Nurse. A broad base of OR nursing experience is preferred, ambulatory surgery experience highly preferred. A minimum of 2-3 years OR experience and flexibility to support a PRN schedule (10 hr shifts) is required.

I.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Clinical Nurse Manager & Administrator.

Given: Center nursing staff and office staff.

II.

INTERNAL /EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

A.

Internal Relationships

1.

Collaborates with the nursing staff and the medical staff.

Serves on assigned committees.

Collaborates with outside professional organizations.

III.

MAJOR DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

A.

Adheres to the Center’s policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice

B.

Assures Patient Safety in the OR, Never Leaves Patient Unattended

C.

Verbally confirms with patient, legal guardian or surgeon the identity of the patient and the site of surgery.

D.

Ensures that the patient’s name and site of surgery is consistent with the consent form, ID bracelet and document this on the procedure verification checklist.

If marking is required, the Circulator is responsible for viewing the mark prior to surgery.

E.

Checks for allergies, dentures, jewelry, prosthesis, hairpins, nail polish, wigs, etc.

F.

Reassures patient; introduces self and the scrub personnel. Checks the patient's physical comfort.

G.

Assures that history and physical and appropriate ordered lab work is on the chart before the patient is anesthetized. An interim history and physical is to be done by the anesthesia provider if there is no history and physical present.

H.

Assesses patient's needs in regard to the surgical procedure.

I.

Assesses patient's needs as to transportation from the pre?op area to the OR Suite.

J.

Maintains professional decorum within the OR.

IV.

Has A Thorough Working Knowledge Of­

A.

Emergency supplies and equipment.

B.

All surgical equipment and supplies.

C.

Aseptic technique.

D.

Current trends in legal implications of surgery and how they apply to each surgical team member.

V.

Local Case Procedure

A.

Follows same procedure as above.

B.

Assures patient needs are met in the OR.

C.

Reviews patient vital signs recorded operatively.

D.

Monitors vital signs during the procedure, and documents on the OR record.

E.

Transports patient to the PACU post procedure.

VI.

General, Spinal or MAC Procedure

A.

Assists in positioning patient

B.

Assures patient privacy, closes OR doors.

C.

Assists anesthesia provider as needed.

VII.

Prep

A.

Follows preference card as to prep solution noting patient allergies.

B.

Follows surgical prep procedure.

VIII.

Duties During Case

A.

Performs a “TIME OUT” for final verbal verification of the patient identity, correct site and procedure prior to the start of the case.

B.

Pours solutions for scrub personnel.

C.

Opens surgical supplies.

D.

Keeps room organized during case, assuring appropriate containment of sponges.

E.

Obtains and removes equipment as needed.

F.

Assures correct surgical counts.

G.

Notes any breaks in technique.

H.

Anticipates the needs of the scrub nurse and keeps him/her supplied with needed materials.

I.

Maintains a clean environment outside of the sterile field.

J.

Protects the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information

.

IX.

Record Keeping

A.

Maintains an accurate, precise, and legible medical record of the surgery performed.

B.

Documents all drains, packs, medications, and staff involved on the operative record.

C.

Assures completeness of pathology requests and appropriate specimen handling.

D.

Completes flow sheet as required for room time and surgery time.

E.

During local cases, maintains a record of the patient’s vital signs, assures OR record is complete with notation of medications given.

X.

Transferring Patient To PACU

A.

Prepares patient for transfer.

B.

Removes all grounding pads, dispersive electrodes.

C.

Positions stretcher or patient recliner, for safety and comfort of the patient, locks wheels.

D.

Transfers patient safely with use of mechanical aids as indicated.

E.

Assure patient has clean gown and warm blanket upon transfer.

F.

Provides report to PACU nurse upon arrival to the PACU.

G.

Returns to OR to assist with turn over.

XI.

Restocks Area With Applicable Supplies At The End Of The Day.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

A.

Minimum Qualifications

1.

Current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse.

2.

Three years perioperative experience or equivalent outpatient surgery center experience.

3.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

4.

BCLS Certification. ( Renewed every two years)
