The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant I position at the Goose Creek Correctional Center located in the Point MacKenzie area.

This position provides clerical support for Administrative and Correctional Staff, the Probation Department, and Records Department at Goose Creek Correctional Center.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:
  • Type memos, correspondence, and reports;
  • Maintain a filing system;
  • Process institutional mail;
  • Order and maintain office supplies;
  • Assist in ordering and receiving items for Inmate stores;
  • Complete on-line travel reservations;
  • Create, make changes to, and maintain institutional computer forms;
  • Calculate employee time sheets;
  • Enter time sheet information into an automated payroll accounting system;
  • Input varied information into multiple databases;
  • Sell meal tickets to staff, account for all funds, and balance cash box on a daily basis;
  • Perform other administrative duties when others are on leave.
The Ideal candidate will have experience in some or all of the above listed job duties.

The successful candidate should possess the ability to work independently and perform clerical assignments with minimal direct supervision.

A strong background in computers, especially Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, and Access is desirable, as this position regularly creates and inputs data into spreadsheets, databases, and various other documents.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or the equivalent.
Six months of experience that includes clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

Education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education equal one month of experience).

A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys® scores of skill level 3 or higher in Locating Information, skill level 3 or higher in Applied Mathematics, and skill level 3 or higher in Reading for Information will substitute for the high school diploma and required experience.

Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a G.E.D.; 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years and includes basic clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

ACT WorkKeys® skill testing and career readiness certification is available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Alaska Job Centers.

Some positions in this class may require the incumbent to operate motor vehicles. Such positions require that the applicant possess a regular Alaska driver's license and be 18 years of age or older.

Some positions in this class may require skill in typing. Recruitment and selection may include this requirement.
