The On-Call Recreation Assistant position is designed to be a support to the four main program areas at the Recreation Center: Camp Accomplish, Access Adventures, Equestrian, and the Retreat Center. Duties include acting as a direct care staff for program participants, providing administrative and facilities coverage, and working special events. Hours vary greatly depending on the season and the need for staff. Overnight stay and travel may sometimes be required in order to fulfill these duties.
Work with assigned participants to promote safety, independence, exploration and integration into the community.
Actively participate in the programs with assigned group by supporting participants at whatever level they may need.
Facilitate program activities and demonstrate a positive attitude at all times.
Demonstrate positive behavioral management techniques and communicate with individuals in a person-centered, age appropriate manner.
Live cooperatively within the camp community and assist with evening cabin or program responsibilities when needed.
Complete notes, daily logs and other documentation thoroughly, accurately and in a timely manner.
Facilitate participant self-esteem through positive interactions and building a relationship of trust.
Develop free time activities that promote team work, positive interaction and personal growth.
Attend and actively participate in required trainings, team meetings, and supervision meetings.
Adhere to and further the mission of Melwood by creating a supportive environment for campers and staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
The On-Call Recreation Assistant is supervised by the Associate Director, Recreation.
Must be able to stand/walk 50% of work time, sit and/or drive 50%. Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull 60 pounds. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach. All of these requirements are necessary in order to supervise and assist individuals with disabilities.
Staff will be required to move between program focus areas as needed and must be willing to work with people of all ages and ability levels, including personal care and lifting when necessary.
H.S. Diploma or equivalent required. BA/BS in special education, therapeutic recreation, psychology or related field (achieved or in progress) and previous experience working with people with disabilities preferred. Demonstrated ability in providing support in a respectful manner that meets the various needs of individuals served. Valid US or international driver’s license and ability to obtain DOT Physical is preferred. Passport may be required for certain trips with Access Adventures.
