Operator II-Culture

GENERAL SUMMARY
This position works under general supervision and is primarily responsible for operating the pelletizing equipment in the plant and one (1) of the following areas:
 Media – mix and sterilize the media used to grow our products.
 Monitoring – monitor the fermentation process by cleaning and prepping inoculating and sampling tanks and transferring product.
 Separating– operate high speed centrifuge equipment used to concentrate bacterial fermentations.
 Scaling–pick and weigh raw materials, packaging and finished goods according to production schedule

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (* = Essential Functions)
1. * Sets-up (assembles and disassembles), operates, adjusts, cleans and sanitizes equipment to produce products within quality standards and according to procedures.
2. * Assists others in the areas trained as required by production demands or by direction of the crew supervisor.
3. * Delivers or picks up raw materials or finished product into and out of -55C freezer.
4. Adheres to all GMP, including sanitary requirements, Safety, ISO and Standardized Work procedures.
5. Runs the required cleaning and sterilization cycle of equipment in accordance with the ISO documentation.
6. Identifies standardized work activities that could be improved through Lean concepts and principles.
7. Reports to work on time and works overtime as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Ability to read, write and speak English.
2. Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts to the production process including conversion of weight and volume in the metric system.
3. Ability to read and follow a recipe for mixing and/or blending product.
4. Ability to operate a forklift and become certified.
5. Possess a basic understanding of computers with an ability to operate basic programming logic controls (PLCs) for equipment operation.
6. Ability to use basic hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, wrench) for assembly and disassembly of equipment.
7. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers regarding the status of the production process.
8. Should be a self-starter that can prioritize their workday and function with minimal direct supervision.
9. These characteristics are normally acquired through a High School Diploma or GED with one year experience in a production environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working environment is a production unit and includes frequent exposures to wet, humid, dusty, or loud conditions, moving machine parts, fumes or airborne particles and caustic chemicals. Occasionally comes in contact with extremely cold conditions (-55C). A company issued uniform is required to be worn along with personal protective equipment at all times. This can include coveralls, dust mask, hearing protection, hair/beard net, safety glasses, gloves, and safety shoes. Work may occur in small rooms with air lock compliance to avoid interdepartmental contamination. Work schedule may involve seven (7) consecutive days of work (including 12-hour weekend shifts) every other week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 25 lbs, use hands to finger, handle objects, tools or controls and roll bags. Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs., scoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and use foot/feet to operate machinery. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
