Scope of the Job

This position requires a professionally multi-skilled individual dedicated to assisting in all aspects of an Ophthalmic practice including clerical duties under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist and a Registered Nurse.

Essential Functions

The essential functions are the primary dimensions for performance review.


Maintains patient privacy.


Assists physician with in-office procedures, refraction, slit lamp exams.


Operates automated/manual visual field analyzers.


Safely operate ophthalmic equipment – cameras, slit lamp, projectors.


Possess knowledge of ocular pharmacology.


Perform other tasks associated with the clinic operation as assigned.


Safely triage patients.

Secondary Functions

Adhere to all regulatory requirements such as, JCAHO, HIPAA, etc.


Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, or unusual situations. Must be capable of dealing with periodic cyclical workload pressures and levels of responsibility. Required to make independent judgments without supervision. Must be able to make generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria. Must have the adaptability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. Requires the ability to work with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.



Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must be able to prioritize work assignments and perform assigned tasks.


At least one year in an Ophthalmic practice.

Education and Certifications

GED or High School Diploma. Must be a JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
