Position Purpose: The Organist gives leadership to the worship services of the First Presbyterian Church in Brookline by using the organ to lift the congregation in music for the praise of God.
Supervision: The Organist serves under the supervision of the Pastor/Personnel Committee.
Select and provide organ music appropriate for Sunday worship service, and in keeping with the seasons and Sundays of the Liturgical calendar. Sunday worship is at 10:15 am preceded by choir rehearsal at 9:00 am
Accompany vocalists and instrumentalists as scheduled
Provide for qualified substitutes for all absences
Accompany and rehearse with the adult choir prior to the Sunday worship service and direct choir as needed
Submit information on music selected in a timely fashion for inclusion in the bulletin
The Organist shall rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music at the organ.
An annual performance review will be done with the Pastor/Personnel Committee
Cooperate with staff and musicians of the congregation so that music ministry in enhanced within the life of the church
Skills and Qualifications:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree and sufficient keyboard ability to sight read hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments
At least 5 years experience playing organ in a church setting with competency with 2-manual pipe organ and piano
Knowledge of Presbyterian worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music for worship
Experience as a “team player” in a church setting
