Performs all aspects of phlebotomy, both venous and capillary, at a client's practice or Outreach facility. Phlebotomist must also be skilled in the SWRL remote entry system, which includes ordering laboratory tests online and printing results. Phlebotomist must be able to work independently and act as a marketing tool for the SWRL Outreach Program.
ABLE TO PERFORM INDEPENDENT IN THE COLLECTION OF SAMPLES BY VENIPUNCTURE OR CAPILLARY METHOD WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF PROFICIENCY FOLLOWING S&W PROCEDURES AND REGULATING AGENCIES GUIDELINES.
*Demonstrates excellent phlebotomy skills and judgment while working independently in a client's facility or SWRL collection facility.
*Follows Scott & White specimen collection guidelines for collection and preservation of all samples, which includes labeling the sample in front of the patient. Instructs patient on collection of samples.
*Responsible for the inventory of collection, processing, and remote order entry supplies.
*Knowledgeable in the treatment of patients before and after collection of the sample. Knows what to do in the event of a fleet or a blue.
*Knowledgeable on the order of draw and the minimum requirements of laboratory samples.
PERFORMS PROCESSING AND PACKING OF SAMPLES AS NECESSARY IN ACCORDANCW WITH S&W AND REGULATORY GUIDELINES.
*Able to correctly process samples and store appropriately. Knowledgeable on what to do with a stat.
*Knowledgeable on where to locate specimen requirements for collection, processing and storage.
*Maintains a clean, orderly and safe work environment at all times following guidelines set forth by S&W and regulatory agencies. This includes monitoring of temperatures and decontamination procedures.
*Follows proper PPE at all times.
*Assists the Reference Lab courier in job duties as necessary and as assigned.
PROFICIENT IN THE USE OF THE REMOTE ORDER ENTRY SYSTEM.
*Able to order and cancel laboratory tests in the remote order entry system and print a requisition.
*Able to retrieve results from the remote order entry system.
*Knowledgeable in selecting the insurance or diagnosis code when ordering a laboratory test; works with the client to obtain this information.
*Knows what to do with an ABN.
*Knowledgeable in other aspects of the remote order entry system as necessary to function independently in a client's office or Outreach collection facility. This includes who to contact with IT or ordering issues.
SERVES AS A LABORATORY LIAISON BETWEEN THE CLIENT'S FACILITY OR THE OUTREACH COLLECTION FACILITY AND SCOTT & WHITE.
*Communicates technical and general information to physicians, nurses and general staff while working in the client's practice or Outreach collection facility in a professional and courteous manner, as well as information back to the SWRL.
*Works with client to obtain samples that must be recollected.
*Able to work with physician's office staff to obtain patient information as needed for ordering laboratory tests.
*Represents SWRL as a liaison according to policies and guidelines set forth by S&W, and acts as a marketing representative.
IS AWARE OF THE PHLEBOTOMIST'S ROLE AT THE CLIENT'S OFFICE OR AT THE OUTREACH COLLECTION FACILITY.
*Makes supervisor aware of potential compliant issues.
*Maintains files of various laboratory records in a neat, organized, and readily retrievable manner according to regulatory requirements. Answers telephone promptly, courteously, and professionally.
*Reports to work as scheduled on time, minimizing unexcused absences. Informs Laboratory Outreach Manager as required of absences and tardies.
*Performs daily work activities in a professional and ethical manner and in accordance with the Scott & White Guiding Business Principles.
TRAINED TO COLLECT S&W PATIENTS AS WELL AS CLIENT PATIENTS.
*Knows how to properly identify and the procedures to use when the patient is an S&W patient and not from an outside physician.
*Knows who to contact for S&W orders on a patient if the orders are not available by computer.
*Knows how to order the patient in the LIS directly or the procedure to use to send the information to an S&W facility to get the samples(s) ordered.
*Knows how to deal with a physician referral patient.
*Knows who to contact in S&W Pathology for assistance.
PERFORMS OTHER POSITION APPROPRIATE DUTIES AS REQUIRED IN A COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL, AND COURTEOUS MANNER.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:
*Knowledgeable in the use of basic office equipment.
*Proficient in Word, Excel, LIS, and a remote order entry system.
*Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program desired.
*Two to three years experience desired.
*Certified Phlebotomist from an acceptable agency (e.g., PBT(ASCP)) is desired.
*Maintains confidentiality of patient information at all times.
*Knowledgeable of the duties that a S&W phlebotomist can perform as outlined in the phlebotomy guidelines written by the Laboratory Outreach Manager.
