Position/Program Information Incumbents in these positions are physicians licensed to render specialized professional medical services in a specific field.

Essential Job Functions
Performs medical work in a specialized medical field within a custody setting.

Treats inmates with a wide variety of medical problems.

Prescribes drugs and/or therapy; monitors patients' progress, records observations and changes, and adjusts treatments as required.

Reviews laboratory, radiological data, and other diagnostic data. Uses a computer to document patient notes.

Consults with staff physicians and para-medical personnel regarding care of patients and medical and diagnostic work performed.

Provides consultation to other medical services, including specialists in other fields.

Performs or assists in carrying out administrative responsibilities, which may include such duties as developing and revising work procedures to expedite work load or improve level of service.

Develops new techniques within the medical specialty.

Maintains varied hours on a rotated schedule with other physicians to ensure that there is always a physician on-site during non-business hours to answer medically related calls.

Drives to any Sheriff’s Department custody facility when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Qualifications SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Board certification in one or more designated specialties* by the American Specialty Board.**

Physical Class Physical Class III – Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

License(s) Required A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out job-related essential functions.****

Certificate(s) Required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.***

License Information: ****Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

Examination Content This examination will consist of an oral interview covering training, experience and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%. As part of the interview, candidates will also be required to complete a brief writing sample to evaluate the ability to write a note detailing a patient's examination.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Special Information APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

Vacancy Information The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Correctional Services Division, Medical Services Bureau.

Eligibility Information The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of (twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
