The Executive Editor is responsible for the publication of the peer-reviewed quarterly journal Southern Cultures. The Executive Editor oversees the process of receiving submissions, reviewing submissions, and selecting contents for the journal in collaboration with the Director of the Center for the Study of the American South, the faculty editors, and the Southern Cultures editorial staff. The Executive Editor oversees and participates in the process of designing the publication, copyediting and proofreading all materials selected, producing the final layout, and submitting the issues for production and distribution. The Executive Editor handles the contract with the publisher for all aspects of subscription-management, production, and distribution of the journal. The Executive Editor develops, updates and implements a comprehensive marketing and public relations plan for Southern Cultures for multiple media and target audiences. The Executive Editor also monitors the fiscal health of Southern Cultures; and collaborates with the UNC Press regarding requests for reprints and other permissions from Southern Cultures. The Executive Editor consults in an editorial capacity and collaborates on other Center publications as requested by the Director of CSAS. The Executive Editor prepares reports/updates for the Director of CSAS and the Center Board regarding the fiscal health and overall status of Southern Cultures, prepares reports/updates for the Center director and the Center Board on success rates of various marketing strategies and promotional campaigns. This position reports directly to the Director of CSAS and supervises temporary staff.
This position requires a thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of planning, writing and editing and producing content. The ideal candidate understands and uses communication, design and visual art concepts and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility. Other requirements include the ability to independently assimilate and compose written materials to use in a variety of communication outlets; ability to edit documents to ensure accuracy in content and form; and ability to draft communications for final release. This person must also have the ability to plan and manage multi-faceted and specialized projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Journalism or English and four years' experience in communication, editing, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
