POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Computer Science is recruiting for a Public Communications Specialist. This position is responsible for increasing the department's positive media coverage and monitoring peer department coverage (regionally, nationally and internationally). This person is also responsible for the conceptualization and managing the production of print and online communications. Examples include but are not limited to: design and multimedia content creation; all aspects of the departmental website development and maintenance, multiple social media platforms; print publications such as the departmental newsletter, fundraising and outreach materials; special event and promotional materials; and press/public relations activities such as news items for faculty/student/alumni accomplishments and Maze Day.

As part of the Research Support and Communications team, this position is responsible for the execution of the department's Outreach, Education and Communications effort to include department demonstrations and tours, the design of instructional, educational, and publicity materials including websites, handouts, and videos, and the design and maintenance of the department's museum and building research displays.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS: This employee must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, possess a strong customer service orientation, be adept at prioritizing workloads, and be responsive to deadlines. He/she must be familiar with desktop publishing, graphic design, printing processes, photography and web technology as well as public relations practices and tactics, and program and event promotion. Must have an excellent command of the English language including professional-level writing and editing skills. Skills to create develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications and marketing plans are required. Social media familiarity and proven expertise in creating and executing promotional plans that incorporate all forms of media. Demonstrated knowledge of desktop publishing, web design, web site development and maintenance, accessibility standards, social media, print production, graphic design, public relations practices and tactics, program and event promotion, and photography and art from the perspective of a project manager are also required. Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, and resolution skills and the ability to adapt to a changing technological environment are essential. Attention to detail and accuracy and strong organizational skills, and the ability to work on several tasks simultaneously are also essential. Must have the ability to develop effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, media, and other key publics.

Preferred Qualifications:
This Public Communications Specialist position has broad responsibility for the Computer Science Department's public relations and communications effort designed to reach various audiences including: multiple internal department and university-wide groups, current and potential funding agencies, various academic audiences to include other computer science departments, potential donors, K-12 institutions and the general public. The ideal candidate will possess: A strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various venues, technical aspects and requirements of various media venues, and most appropriate and effective applications. Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, et cetera. The employee should demonstrate the ability to exercise good judgment and maintain effective working relationships; Experience with communicating technical or IT information to both technical and nontechnical audiences highly desired. The ability to work under stress and to exhibit flexibility is useful due to the workload of this position. At least five years of professional communications experience or experience in a strongly related field.
