POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists attorney in all phases of performing legal services in the healthcare/hospital setting.

The specific duties will vary somewhat depending on the specific type of project or transaction.

Also performs a variety of secretarial duties for attorney according to established policies and procedures.

Maintains positive contact with clients, outside attorneys, and staff and observes confidentiality of all client matters.

Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:
1.

Perform preliminary legal research and draft documents.

a.

Performs legal research on various healthcare matters, including but not limited to compliance matters, physician and other healthcare provider licensure status, and entities’ legal status.

b.

Prepares initial drafts of various physician and other healthcare provider agreements, as needed.

c.

Reviews drafts of various agreements, evaluates and analyzes compliance with elements of Stark law and other pertinent laws, and identifies language for further review by attorney.

d.

Responds to basic legal and compliance questions regarding contracting, physician relationships, HIPAA, and other healthcare matters.

e.

Provides assistance to facilities in using the Upside contract management system, including responding to questions on legal compliance matters and the proper form(s) to be used for various contracting situations.

f.

Reviews final contracts for compliance with Stark law, other pertinent laws, and internal policies.

g.

Communicates with clients regarding information needed to evaluate Stark compliance issues.

h.

Responsible for contract and legal document routing and management in the Division.

i.

Prepares correspondence (e.g., demand letters), memoranda and other legal documents from written and oral drafts; drafts standard correspondence and other documents.

2. Creates and maintains all legal files.

a.

Accumulates necessary documentation and information from clients to prepare appropriate legal documents.

b.

Organizes and maintains project files.

c.

Assists with gathering of documents to be produced in response to regulatory and litigation requests.

d.

Assists with gathering of information on as-needed basis.

e.

Conducts periodic review for possible storage of older files; prepares files to be closed.

3. Provides administrative support to Senior Vice President.

a.

Serves as the primary source of hospital contact with the legal department.

b.

Establishes and maintains calendar and deadline reminder systems; utilizes master calendar system.

Makes appointments for attorney.

c.

Operates a computer and transcribes dictation as needed.

d.

Screens telephone calls and records messages.

e.

Reads, sorts and dates incoming mail.

Ensures that outgoing mail is timely delivered.

If necessary, routes mail to specific delivery service and follows up on timely delivery.

f.

Receives clients and visitors; maintains good public relations with clients; observes confidentiality of attorney-client relationship.

g.

Reviews bills from outside legal counsel to determine compliance with billing guidelines.

h.

Performs compilation, preparation, and photocopying of correspondence.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
Required:
Minimum paralegal certificate or undergraduate degree from accredited college.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
·

Ability to read and write in order to proof and perform editing (e.g., punctuation, grammar,

spelling) of routine law office correspondence and legal matters.

Perform non-complex

arithmetic calculations when verifying calculations on forms and documents; maintain records

and filing systems at a level normally acquired through completion of high school or

equivalent.

Ability to transcribe legal documents, correspondence and reports from rough draft at a

level of 50 wpm.

·

Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.

·

Ability to proofread typed material for grammatical, typographical or spelling errors.

·

Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and follow instructions effectively from a

diverse group of leaders and staff to provide information with courtesy and tact.
