Exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; va ried day & evening hours; work hours depend on program scheduling; weekend hours included; full-benefits

This professional position is responsible for all phases of operation, programs, and management of the Fountain Rock Nature Center. Supervision is given to volunteers, seasonal part-time personnel; supervision is received from the Recreation Superintendent.

Examples of Work:
  • Recruit, schedule and lead environmental education programs for school groups, scout troops, pre-schools, senior citizen groups and the general public.
  • Research and develop a variety of environmental programs, including those that enhance Frederick County Public School Curriculums, pre-schools, home schools, and private schools
  • Coordinate, lead, and schedule seasonal part-time staff for nature themed birthday party programs
  • Plan, implement and lead family nature programs; develop outdoor natural history study areas
  • Actively coordinate, plan, and lead various seasonal canoe/float trips, hikes, and other nature programs and outings along Frederick County rivers/creeks and various parks
  • Recruit and educate volunteers in cooperation with the Fountain Rock Nature Council and area Colleges
  • Market and publicize programs available to school personnel and to the general public
  • Develop program packets for teacher and student use
  • Maintain accurate attendance and budget records
  • Submit in a timely manner all monthly records of performance to Recreation Superintendent
  • Collect and maintain natural objects and artifacts for display use
  • Organize and maintain a library of nature books, journals, photos and displays
  • Respond to inquiries from visitors and others concerning natural and cultural history of park and Frederick County
  • Maintain the Nature Center to present a clean and appealing facility and coordinate with Parks and Recreation maintenance staff for physical maintenance
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as needed for all programs and summer nature camps
  • Supervise park facilities during program hours
  • Operate a County vehicle to transport recreational equipment and supplies and participants as needed
  • Perform daily operation duties for the Nature Center
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Zoology, Forestry, Wildlife Management, Parks and Recreation, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience developing and coordinating nature programs and/or management of a nature center facility
  • Proficient skill in MS Office Suite programs
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license, with ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County Employee Driving Permit
  • Ability to obtain a Swift Water Rescue Certification
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid, or ability to become so certified within 60 days of hire (current certifications must be maintained throughout employment)
  • Thorough knowledge of environmental science and principles of outdoor programming
  • Ability to accurately compile and maintain statistical data and reports
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills including the ability to produce promotional text for media use and publication; to speak before various audiences; and to maintain all files, forms, correspondence, etc. related to program operations
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers and other persons of all ages, abilities and socio-economic circumstances
  • Physical requirements include the ability to load, unload and set up Nature Center equipment and displays, as well as the ability to traverse woods, fields and other rough terrain
  • Master Naturalist administration experience
  • Experience managing the operations at a nature center facility
  • Experience teaching nature related programs
  • Experience working with groups of children in a recreational setting
  • Experience working with animals (care of personal pets is not acceptable)

Additional Information/Examination Process:
  • Available to work at least 3 Parks and Recreation special events throughout each year
  • Available for other work hours according to program reservations, scheduled presentations and meetings, including evening and weekend hours
