Non-exempt; part-time; minimum 40 hours of availability per month required, varied days, hours and shift assignments as scheduled; no-benefits

This skilled, professional position involves all phases of emergency medical services operations including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support duties (ALS), as well as routine non-emergency assignment. Station, unit assignment and other details will be determined by the County. Shifts will be scheduled for maximum support of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations. Direction is received through the Division of Fire and Rescue Services (DFRS) chain of command and the Bureau Chief of Emergency Services.

Examples of Work:
  • Respond on emergency apparatus to render aid to sick and injured persons and provide BLS and ALS care at a wide variety of emergency incidents
  • Drive and operate emergency vehicles and apparatus
  • Maintain equipment
  • Restock supplies and maintain emergency vehicle readiness by performing regular maintenance and inspections
  • Write accurate and legible reports regarding incidents and patient care
  • Perform routine administrative tasks
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of area roads and subdivisions
  • Maintain knowledge of current Maryland Protocols, Triage Plan and Mass Casualty operations
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum age 21 years
  • Current license as a MD State Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic or MD State Cardiac Rescue Technician – Intermediate (or current certification as a National Registry Paramedic or Intermediate/99 with ability to obtain MD State certification within 60 days after hire)
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support through American Heart Association or a comparable certification body, or ability to obtain these certifications prior to starting ALS designate program (these certifications costs are not paid by DFRS) - preference may be given for these trainings already completed at time of application
  • Completed Hazardous Materials operations level training through MFRI, National Safety Council or a comparable certification body
  • Completed Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) through MFRI, National Safety Council or a comparable certification body
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training IS-100, 200, 700 and 800, or ability to successfully complete all of these courses during the ALS designate program
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County Employee Driving Permit
  • Sufficient knowledge of Maryland Pre-Hospital Medical Protocols to effectively work as a sole ALS provider in a lead EMS provider role
  • Ability to apply training to quickly, calmly and effectively respond to emergencies using good judgment and independent action
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to understand and carry out orders and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, fire and rescue volunteer and career personnel, and the general public
  • Physical requirements include the ability to respond to the spontaneous physical demands of comprehensive EMS duties, all of which may require standing, walking, running, lifting, bending, stooping, driving, climbing stairs/ladders, crawling and working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Examples of EMS duties include: respond to all types of emergency situations and rescue operations; lift patients of any size/weight using various devices; use manual and mechanical tools during emergency operations; wear and use specialized protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Physical requirements necessitate that facial hair is maintained to properly wear SCBA full- and half-piece air purifying respirators and other job-specific safety equipment, and pass SCBA fit test throughout employment
  • Ability to successfully complete DFRS EMS Work Performance Evaluation program on a periodic basis as defined by the Division
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete DFRS training, orientation and designate program
  • Ability to meet and maintain ALS physical readiness standards, including periodic physical examination
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Currently licensed as a MD State Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic or certified as a National Registry Paramedic
  • 3 or more years of ALS experience
  • Additional related education, training and/or experience

  • Specified certifications, licenses and physical abilities stated above must be maintained throughout employment
EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):

1) A written examination including general ALS knowledge and practice, medication calculation and EKG recognition
2) An evaluation of training, education and experience
3) Successful completion of Division's EMS Work Performance Evaluation program
4) A practical skills evaluation (adult cardiac arrest scenarios)
5) A spoken examination before a panel
6) One or more interviews
7) A pre-employment psychological examination
8) A pre-employment physical examination including pulmonary function test, color perception test, fitness-for-duty evaluation and determination of tobacco use (disqualifier)
9) A pre-employment drug test
