Regular working hours are from 7:00AM-6:30PM on Saturdays with additional hours as needed up to 13.5 hours per week.

The Rochester Public Library (MN) seeks a regular, part-time Saturday custodian who is highly motivated, energetic, organized and hardworking with excellent customer service skills to work in the Library's maintenance division. The Maintenance Division is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the library building and its fixtures, furnishings and systems. Work involves routine cleaning and maintenance duties to ensure the library premises is clean, orderly, properly maintained, and safe. Most work is performed independently, under the direction of the Building Maintenance staff and the supervision of the Administrative Services Coordinator. Some decision making and judgment is required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to set priorities and be flexible in spite of routine interruptions. The successful candidate can work independently, steadily, and efficiently for an extended period of time. The ability to work with the public and uphold library customer service standards is essential.

Rochester Public Library (RPL) is a division of the City of Rochester, MN. The Library is a very busy downtown library and bookmobile(approximately 600,000 visits per year, over 1.6 million items checked out and the busiest bookmobile in the state of Minnesota). RPL serves the City of Rochester, Olmsted County, and visitors from all over the world.

The Rochester Public Library is dedicated to providing the community with access to information, literature, and ideas.


*1. Vacuum, sweep, mop and shampoo carpet and floors. Dust and clean furniture, shelves, and equipment.

*2. Clean restrooms and replenish supplies. Clean drinking fountains, kitchen, appliances, workroom sinks, countertop and other items and areas.

*3. Wash windows, doors, walls and glass. Collect recyclables tubs. Remove trash from wastebaskets and clean wastebaskets if needed.

*4. Sweep, hose, and clear sidewalks and steps of debris and snow.

*5. Perform minor maintenance, routine repairs and minor plumbing.

*6. Assist library staff and the public using photocopiers and reader/printers or other equipment.

*7. Open the building in the morning and close and secure the building at the end of the day.

*8. Meet the City's Customer Service Standards in all interactions with the public and staff.

9. Perform other tasks as assigned



Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

Some experience in custodial or building maintenance work preferred.

Some basic experience with the monitoring of building maintenance and control systems preferred.

Special Requirement

Background/criminal history check required as a condition of employment.



Knowledge of: custodial and building maintenance practices, supplies, and equipment.

Ability to: perform physical work associated with general custodial and maintenance duties; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; perform work independently; complete routine and repetitive tasks; tolerate interruptions to work; interact with library staff and library users positively and pleasantly.

Skill in: use of custodial and building maintenance tools, materials, supplies and equipment.

Work is primarily done while standing, with a combination of bending, stooping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, and reaching also necessary.

Use of custodial cleaning agents and chemicals is required.

The bulk of the work is done indoors in a controlled environment, with occasional work required outdoors.
